8/29/01 Hey Arden! I sent off a special box for you and Lucca Monday morning that has a surprise in it for you! When I was staying at the beach I found the shells of 4 crabs that I saved for you and Lucca to see, so you will know what we can catch when you come to New Jersey. It's hard to tell what a real live crab looks like from its shell alone, so I found a few pictures . . .

This is a horseshoe crab, its secret name is Limulus polyphemus. They are pretty creepy! And they have been around since the time the dinosaurs were alive! This one looks kind of like a crab, and people call them crabs, but they are more closely related to

I also sent you the shell of a blue crab, its secret name is Callinectes sapidus. They are cool because they swim everywhere they go! See the paddles on their back legs? These are the kind of crabs people eat here, so we will have to try and catch some. But we will have to be careful, because they are MEAN, and their pincers are very sharp! I sent you two other kinds of crabs, but I couldn't find pictures of them -- they are still pretty cool! I hope you like them! Maybe you can take them to school for sharing . . . I love you, Daddy
spiders -- isn't that weird? If we go to the beach at the right time of the month, we can find hundreds of horseshoe crabs on the beach, laying eggs to make baby crabs. All the birds love it because they like to eat the eggs. I hope we get to see the horseshoe crabs laying their eggs -- that would be cool!
