The following was written as a tribute for Robert R. Herndon, Sr. by two of his granddaughters shortly after he became our Cowboy-Eagle-Angel in the sky. They had hoped to each read what they had written during his memorial service. Unfortunately, they never got a chance to read it to all that attended the service and as luck was to have it, the daughter of Robert R. Herndon, Sr. ended up with their tribute to him.
This wise old man with the prettiest blue eyes, laid to rest on this late raining night. The day was muggy and hot. Towards the end of his time it started to get windy and cloudy. When I was slowed down by a firetruck with sirens going, I remember reading something about grandpa saying he didn't like firetrucks. I knew something had happened. Especially when I was greeted by nothing but sirens, flashing lights. When I stepped out of my little GMC, I felt the moistness of the rain falling down. I remembered how grandpa could breathe clearer and he was now breathing nice and clearer now. I knew he was gone and at peace. I was in denial, but I knew he was finally home. This man was a very wise and intelligent man. he always fought strongly and cared deeply about his family. Especially his angel that has touched many lives. My grandmother was always his angel and will continue to be our angel in our lives. He will always be the cowboy in my heart and soul. I will never forget seeing him with his cowboy hat, wrangler jeans, his guitar and his prettiest sky blue eyes, with a charmer smile on his face. As the time got closer, he always tried to sow his sense of humor and tender heart; even through the pain he was going through and watching. His memory will be carried on by each of his grandchildren, great grandchildren, his loving family, and those whose lives he touched through his lifetime. His memory will remain. This day we are putting a loving husband, son, father, grandfather and great grandfather to rest. "Grandpa keep playing your new Martin for us and we will one day reunite with you. Fly high and freely like a Eagle in the sky, Grandpa. We love you. Love Melissa Trinette
I am Amy Marie Bilger, the granddaughter of Robert Reginald Herndon, Sr. He was known to me as my granddaddy, gramps, grampy or whatever I would think to say at the time. It was something I did when I was a little girl, calling him other than grandpa. He would always look at me with that grin he had & say "Now Wee-Wee you know I am your grandpa." Wee-Wee is what my name was from grandpa. I can still hear him say it. "Wee-Wee come here & give me some sugar." My grandfather was a tender-hearted, strong-willed & very proud man. Someone I will always respect! He loved each one of us in his own way. Grandpa to me - the wisest man that I've ever known. I will always cherish his wisdom & guidance he gave me. I will always remember the farm in Tennessee where we stayed summers outside sitting on the porch, making homemade ice cream, & running down the hill till we fell at the bottom. I love you Grandpa ! Always & Forever! & thank you for last night. He knows what I mean. I will never forget. Amy Marie |
