McGurn Coat-of-Arms
The McGurn coat-of-arms are as depicted by the Histroical Research Center. However I have not been able to find a copy on any Irish Heraldic sites. The nearest I can get is the McGovern crest.

It may be that long ago the McGurn's had been connected to the McGovern's. Irish clan names don't seem to be a straight forward as Scot's clan names.

I have been trying to find various spellings. Depending on how you said the name depended on how it would have been written down. According to Irish Ancestors there are 9 variants. However my family spelling has 18 households in the Primary Valuation property survey of 1848-64.

In Fermanagh there were 13 families, in Leitrim 2 families and in Mayo 3 families.

Other variants of the surname are GURRAN (7 households) GUREEN (2), GURREN (6), GURRIN (6), MAGURN (4), McGURIN (2), McGURRAN (16) & McGURREN (10)

If you have any of these variants please let me know. It may be we are connected.

McGURN FAMILY
McGURN  Liverpool 1881 to 1918
In the 1881 census we have living at 24 Troughton Street, PHILIP McGURN and his wife JANE ANNIE OWENS. They had three children at that time so it is presumed they had married around 1876/7. Their eldest child was MARY FRANCES b 1878 (although the census has her name as Mary H) ELLEN MAY b 1879 and ROBERT EDWARD b 1881 (my grandfather) There may have been a further 4 children born after 1881 as CHARLES E was born 1891. His occupation is listed as wheelwright/Coachbuilder. There was a Livery Stable at 18 Troughton St and one wonders if he worked there.

Mary Frances who was nicknamed Polly by the family married JOHN SMEATON COMBE  and eventually emigrated to Canada with her family.

Robert Edward married ELEANOR HARRIS in 1913.. They had 9 children. Robert's occupation was Furniture Remover working for a Company called Mousells.. In those days he had a horse drawn vehicle. The horse , named Dolly, apparently had an aversion to men however Robert was able to control her and when Mousells went over to motorised vehicles Robert tried to keep Dolly however the management wouldn't allow it and consequently Dolly was put down, much to Robert's dismay.

Charles married MARGARET CATHERINE GRIFFITHS. They had 5 children, CHRISTOPHER, PHILIP, FRANCES MARY, ROBERT EDWARD and CHARLES ERNEST.  Two of them Christopher and Charles Ernest didn't survive their first year. Charles himself tragically  didn't survive WWI. He had enlisted in 1915 in the 7th Service Btn, Loyal North Lancs and saw service throughout France & Flanders, including the Somme and 3rd Ypres only to die behind the front lines in January 1918 when a stray German shell hit them. 8 other members of his unit also died.
