Dear friends,
Thank you very much for the questions you asked me about my country, Ukraine.
Well, to start with, Ukraine is a large European country. Its territory equals England, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Denmark, Ireland and Iceland taken together. It is a sovereign state. The Declaration of Independence of Ukraine was proclaimed on August 24, 1991, by the Ukrainian Parliament. Our state consists of 24 regions and one autonomous republic, the Crimea.
The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv. By the way, I live in Kyiv. Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and therefore there are a lot of places of historic interest in it. Its history goes back to the 5th century. Ancient Kyiv was a large commercial centre of the East Slavs. A great role in the history of Kyiv was played by Prince Volodymyr, who united Slav peoples. So Kyiv was made the capital of Ancient Rus.
There are a lot of places of historic interest in Kyiv.
Among them are: Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra(Monastery), the Monument to Prince Volodymyr, St.Sophia Cathedral , Mariyinsky Palace ,Andriyivsky Descent, Golden Gate , the monument to Taras Shevchenko and the monument to Bogdan Khmelnitsky.
The cultural life of our capital is rich and varied .
There are a lot of fine museums in it: the Historical Museum ,the Museum of Ukrainian Art ,the Museum of Russian Art , the Taras Shevchenko Museum, the Museum of Western and Oriental Art and others.
Many research institutes and higher educational establishments are to be found here. Kyiv is also famous for its theatres such as the Ivan Franko Ukrainian Drama
Theatre, the Taras Shevchenko Opera and Ballet Theatre and others.
Kyiv is a large political, industrial and scientific centre.
Its population is 3 million. It is situated on the banks of the River Dnipro.
There are a lot of places of interest to see in Ukraine and to be proud of. There are the Carpathians with their legends , castles , cathedrals and unique traditions . There’s Poltava with its museum of the Poltava battle , and the small island of Khortitsa near Zaporizhya where the Ukrainian Cossacks’ organization was born. Tourists from many countries of the world come to Odessa, Yalta and Sevastopol to see Ukraine’s history and culture, and of course, have a wonderful holiday.
Thank you for your attention.

Environmental pollution is one of the most burning problems of our time. Nowadays every schoolgirl or schoolboy knows what acid rain and greenhouse effect mean. Ecologists list about 150 species that disappeared from our planet in the past three centuries. It’s too late to do something about those 150 species but we could do something about the 240 species that are threatened now. Not only animals but many plants become extinct. It’s of vital importance to preserve our nature with its flora and fauna. Because everything in the nature is in balance . There are also practical reasons for protecting the nature. Plants often have unique medical and other properties . Animals still have much to teach us.
