Hi Jerry,

How are you? Glad to see you again!

You know, I’d like to ask you some questions concerning the system of education in Great Britain. You may ask me why I am so interested in such questions. Well, there’s a possibility that after finishing school I’ll go to England to have further education.

My English friend told me that all children in Great Britain have 11 years of compulsory education. At the age of five all children go to primary school and stay there until they are eleven. At the age of eleven pupil’s progress is measured in each subject. Pupils are streamed according to their ability to study in A,B,C and D streams. To receive a secondary education most children go to secondary school. The vast majority of schools teach boys and girls together. The Curriculum consists of English , Maths, Music, Art, PE, Science, History , Geography, Computer Technology, Foreign Languages. Young people leave school at the age of sixteen after taking GCSE(general certificate of secondary education) exams. But a lot of pupils choose to stay on at school after GCSE. They usually study for two years more in the so-called the sixth class. They choose two or three subjects and prepare them for advanced level exam. The ‘A’ level exam is taken at the age of 18 , and is the main requirement for entry to university education and to many forms of professional training.

All Britain’s universities enjoy academic freedom. They appoint their staff and decide what and how to teach. First degree courses usually last for three or four years. Over 90% of students of first degree receive grants covering tuition fees and accommodations .

Foreign students are also welcome but they have to pay for their tuition.
