British Miitary Admnistratio (BMA). On 12th September the Japanese surrender to the Supreme Allied Commander for South East Asia Lord Louis Mountbatten.and the British Military Administration took over the "rule" of Malaya..The schools were reopened and I went back to Bukit Zahrah to continue my schooling  Intially the relationship between the Malayans and British were cordial. Later when the British decided to set up the Malayan Union it turned "sour".
Malayan Union. Some British officilals in London deciided to use this opportunity to make Malaya into a fully British "crown colony". To make it legally.correct Sir Harold MacMichael came out to Malaysia and through "dubious means" obtained the approval of the Rulers. The Malays objected to the formation of Malayan Union  and one of the outcomes was the formation of United Malay National Organisation under the leadrship of Dato Onn bin Jaafar of Johor
Malayan Emergency. The emergence of  world communism resulted in communist terrorist (CT) activities which resulted in the declaration of the Malayan Emergency in 1948. The disruption of the the telephone and telegrapic lines by the CTs kept my father very busy and kept him away from home most of the time. As he was unable to get help to look after us he decided to send my sister and brothers to Sri Lanka so that his mother could look after them. Picture below shows my sister Selvarani (2nd from left) my brother Nadarajah (3rd from left) and my brother Sivarajah (extreme left) with my grandmother (extreme right).
Though 58 years has passed, I feel sad and disappointed that Dato Onn has not been given the full credit he desrves for bringing the Malays together and forming UMNO which became the "backbone" of the political party Allaiance and subsequently the National Front.that obtained independence without bloodshed and had governed from then on without a break. Dato Onn was no stranger to politics. He, his father and his brother had been Mentri Besars of Johor. His idea of having a multi racial UMNO which resulted in Tengku Abdul Rahman taking over the leadership of Malays "only" UMNO might have been influenced by the history of Johor where Chinese had participated  in the "government" of the Sultanates.
I continued with my eduction at English College JB. My academic ability and interest was limited when compared with my out door activities and sports. UMNO was being established and many of my Malay friends parents were actively involved. I joined my friends in running errants for their parents and enjoyed the Malay cakes that was "rewared" for our work. As UMNO began to take shape and started showing strength some of my friends got directly involved and ended up as politicioms. As for me I was more interested in sports. I managed to win the 440 yards for 3 consective years in the Johor State Athekitic championship and thus managed to retain the Championship cup.
But playing rugby was more fun. Not only I played for English College 1st XV but also for the Johor State XV. Not only I was the only school boy in the team but also the only non European. UMNO has succeeded in getting Malayan Union replaced by Federation of Malaya and the mood of the Johoreans at this time was such that anything that contibuted to break into the European domain was cheered upon. Thus I had no shortage of supporters.
The emergence of world communism and their success in China gave the Malayan Communist Party the encouragement to turn Malaya into a commubist "State". The success of UMNO in getting the Malayan Union replaced by Federation of Malaya made them desperate and the MPAJA which was renamed Malayan Liberation Army (MLA)) took to the jungles and started communist terrorist (CTs) activities in Malaya and an Emergency was declared in 1948. The MLA tried to give the impression that they were representing the Malayans. But it was far from it. Tunku who had taken over the leadership of UMNO who was working for independence through  peaceful means had the full support of the Malays. The British were cheesed off for it was affecting their economic interest and strenthening Tunkus hand towards working for independence much earlier then they hoped for..
After sitting for my "Senoir Cambridge" examination I joined the Singapore Police Force
