| Sultan Abu Bakar also created the Johor Military Force (pic below) in 1886. This was 47 years before the formation of the "Experimental Company" of the Malay Regiment in 1933 by the Federated Malay States of which Johor was not a member. |

| Initially recruitment from Johor into the Malay Regiment was not allowed. Subsiquently a quota of not exceeding 20% of Johoreans was set. However post World War II years saw many Johoreans in the top ranks of the Malaysian Armed Forces. Of the first four Chief of the Armed Forces Staff, two, Gen Tun Ibrahim and Gen Tan Sri Gazali Seth were from Johor. Among the many other Generals from Johor were (pic below from left to right) Gen Dato Wan Ismail, Gen Dato Selvarajah, Gen Dato Jaffar Onn and Gen Dato Othman. |
| Education had been one of the primary concerns of the Johor Rulers. Sultan Abu Bakar established the Johor Free School in 1864, where English and Malay was the medium of instruction. Sultan Ibrahim continued by expanding and modernizing education facilities and English College of Johor Baru became a premier school. |

| Picure on the right shows English College prior to 1931. English College has produced some outstanding students. Amongst them were the late Prime Minister Tun Hussein Onn, Royal Professor Ungku Aziz, Gen Tun Ibrahim, Gen Tan Sri Gazali Seith and Tan Sri Philip Kuok. |

| English College was moved to a new location about 299 yards away in 1931 and I am very proud to have been a product of English College. Picture below is the new English College in the background and breasting the tape in the 440 yards final is myself. |
