A little history about the Mongars of Meagher County. George Mongar Sr. came west with General George Armstong Custer's party as a teamster working for the Army Veterinarian. The Veterinarian went to Texas and George Sr. went with him, but George Sr. did not take to the Texas way and he traveled back to Montana, were he made friends with a man called Jenkins who owned a ranch were the Tenderfoot Creek empties into the Smith River just northwest of White Sulphur Springs. George Sr. found Montana life to his liking and homesteaded the Tenderfoot Valley were he married and fathered his children, one being George II, my father who lived on the homestead until 1918. After the death of Jonny Mongar, George Sr. and family then sold the homestead and moved to Missoula, Montana. My father George II and brothers Tom, Bill, and Robert along with sisters Rooth, Ellen, Lilly, Bessy and Carie a local White Sulphur Springs artist all retained a fondness for White Sulphur Springs and the Tenderfoot. Many of them spent summers visiting the Tenderfoot renewing memories of the hardships and blessings of being born and raised so far from civilization.
