High Scoring Hijinks Continues As Jets Route 'Canes 6-5

The Jets continued their strong offensive play as Keller, Lemieux, Eastwood, and Kolanos all tallied goals. Strbak, Beech, and Keller all had 3 point games. Fleury stopped 31 of 35 shots and was replaced by Caron in the last minutes of the 3rd.

Williams, Bayada, Ward, and Stall all added in goals for Carolina, but came up short in the final stretch of the game. Irbe stopped 19 of 23 shots, and was replaced by Storr who stopped 12 of 14 shots.

Both teams came into the game with a solid offense, but what lacked for both teams was defensive play.

1st Period
01:08- WIN Lemieux Assisted by Tkackuck, Tverdovsky
04:42- CAR Williams Assisted by Wesley, Svobada
17:31- WIN Kolanos Assisted by, Koltsov, Strbak
18:12- CAR E.Stall

The scoring for Winnipeg picked up where it left off from the Boston game as Lemiex scored a slapper from the point, which took a bounce off of the extended blocker arm of Irbe and slid in the net. Williams was there to answer the goal only minutes later off a one-timer pass from Wesley. 1-1 Tie

At the 17:31 mark Kolanos took a shot from the center of the right circle which hooked to the right and smacked the upper right post dead- on and dropped into the net. Once again the 'Canes answered the goal less than a minute later as Staal made a breakaway goal on Fleury at the 18:12 mark.

2nd Period
02:56 WIN Eastwood (SH) Assisted by Strbak
09:48 WIN Keller Assisted by Strbak, Beech

The second period is where the Jets began to pull ahead after a roughing penaty was called on Tverdovsky. Eastwood was able to steal away the puck by a poke check on Williams. He skated down the ice with nothing between him but the goalie, his shot went off the chest of Irbe and bounced high, landing behind the net. With a quick move Eastwood was able to retreive the puck and put it in net with a wraparound goal with 6.2 seconds left on the PP for a SH goal putting the Jets ahead 3-2.

At 9:48 in the 2nd period is when rookie Keller began to heat up. With a pass by Strbak, Keller made a shot through traffic which bounced of a defenseman in front and dribbled over the crease to give the Jets a 4-2 lead. Storr came in at goal to replace Irbe.

3rd Period
07:28 WIN Keller Assisted by Kraft, Beech
13:11 CAR Bayda
15:34 WIN Keller Assisted by Orpik, Beech
17:24 CAR Williams Assisted by Svoboda, Stall
19:53 CAR Ward Assisted by Storr

Keller continued to wreak havok on the scoreboard with another tally at the 7:28 mark to take the 5-2 lead. Carolina was able to net a goal nearly 5 minutes later to lower the Jets lead back down to 2 goals. But less than 2 minutes after Bayda's goal, Keller let a hard slap shot rip from the point, which Storr never even saw. Keller completed his hat-trick scoring 3 goals in his first ever point-producing game. No hats rained down, because Keller was on the road, but the congratulations from the team seemed to be just fine. 6-3 Jets

All seemed lost for Carolina until a swift one-timer pass caught Williams at the right spot, as he rifled it past Fleury for his second goal of the night. Fleury was then replaced by Caron for his first time in net for the season. Caron lasted just over 2 minutes in goal as Ward scored a goal of a long-bomb pass into the neutral zone by goaltender Storr with 7 seconds left in the game. Game over 6-5 Jets.

"While I am pleased by my teams offensive play out there tonight, I'm not to happy with how many goals were let by," said Ducaine. "But overall I think we are playing good hockey, and I don't think I can ask for much more than 3 wins entering the season.".
