Teide |
Mount Teide is still considered an active volcano. The most recent activity occurred in 1909. It is Spain's highest peak and in winter can be capped in snow. It seems strange that when you leave the apartment you drive through the lower slopes that are covered in cactus and agaves, then drive through pine woodland and finally above the treeline to a barren volcanic landscape. Up here such films as Planet of the Apes were made. Even in summer it is recommended to take a jumper and long trousers before taking the cable car up the side of the volcano's cone. Sometimes a small plume of smoke can be seen against the sky. The views of the Island are terrific particularly on a cloudless day. |
