Fossil site.
Taken from our supply helicopter, this picture is of our camp site and Walcott's Quarry. Walcott's Quarry is one of the few fossil sites in the world where Burgess Shale fauna can be excavated with thier soft body parts fossilized. The Burgess Shale fauna are from the Cambrium period approx. 500-550 million years ago.
I worked with Dr. Desmond Collins' team from the Royal Ontario Museum for the summer of 1999 as a field assistant. We lived in tents for periods of ten days at a time with four days off. Hard but incredibly satisfying work. Travel time from Field to the camp ~3h 30min. Travel time down the mountain switch-back trail to Field ~1h 30min. We dug 10 feet of snow out of the quarry when we got there. It snowed in august. Three hour hike from the nearest populated place. Over two months with the same 7 people. A night sky that will blow your mind. Finding organisms that have not been seen for 500 million years. Best view of a glacier lake from a toilet can in the world.........Priceless. Easily one of the best summers of my life!
