Reign in Blood is the fifth album by these masters of thrash. It was released in 1986 (same year as Master of Puppets) on Def American Records. This ranks among the peak of the greatest thrash albums made, if not the best. In my opinion it is the best, followed by Megadeth's Rust in Peace, and then Metallica's Master of Puppets. The album opens up with the Slayer classic Angel of Death. This song features some of Slayer's best talent with superb drumming with a quick solo and a great battle of lead guitars commencing with an aural attack by Hanneman, a counterattack with King, then Hanneman going at it again, King doing one last stand, and Hanneman finishing it up, then Lombardo comes in with the big equipment for a quick assault. Altar of Sacrifice features some amazing screams on the guitar, and Raining Blood ends with both Hanneman and King going nuts on their guitars making them pierce your ears. Both mixes of Criminally Insane feature Lombardo opening up with odd timing on the drums, and the remix features some good screaming lead in the intro. When my dad heard that part of the remix he was like "Make that guitar sing! Yeah!" This album is one of the greatest that metal has to offer and I command you to get it. Grade: A |
