| Paramaecium is an outstanding doom metal band, up there with Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, and Anathema. They are also up at the top of Christian metal in general. Their second album, Within the Ancient Forest, is based off a book written by frontman, Andrew Tompkins. The first track, In Exordium flows along a melody that is very similar to O Little Town of Bethlehem. Beautiful female vocals lead the way on Song of the Ancient, with some growling vocals accompanying it occasionally. Harpsichord opens up the song I am not Alive, which has a lot of clean vocals and some female vocals. This is a good release, dark with a slight medieval touch and very dirgy. | A Time to Mourn is the third installment by these Christian doom metal masters from Australia. It opens up with semi-ambient A Moment in which female operatic vocals are backed by the band's instrumentation. It flows right into I'm Not to Blame, a crunching doom metal opus with death vocals and female harmonizing. Betrayed Again is one of the best tracks on the album. It is very dirgy with violins in the background and clean vocals throughout the entire piece. Enter in Time fades in, and violins lead the way during the intro, making it a beautiful song. There is more female vocals in Live for the Day, which are very graceful. The album ends on the same note it began, the semi-ambient piece, though entitled Unceasing. These guys are great artists of doom metal and I recommend all of their material. It is very well done and this album is no exception. Grade: B+ | |||||||||||||||
