Metal Militia
This is Metallica's first release and it is a killer. It has an old school punk rock feel into it and the music is some of the best that Metallica ever wrote. Four Horsemen is a great song with tons of lead guitar and great riffs trompling down upon your eardrums. Cliff Burton shows his talent in the bass solo track, (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth. He does a great job shredding the bass apart, and he is playing it through a bass overdrive pedal. Seek and Destroy is a great opus that gets you in the mood to go to war and it leads right into the heavy metal anthem, Metal Militia. It is a fast and powering call-to-arms go out and win over metalheads, fantastic song. This is a great album with fabulous music, but the production lacks compared to the rest of their albums, however, the music ranks up there with Master of Puppets. Grade: A-

Track Listing:

Fight Fire with Fire
Ride the Lightning
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Fade to Black
Trapped Under Ice
Escape
Creeping Death
Call of the Ktulu
This is Metallica's second album featuring more music that will execute your ear drums. Fight Fire with Fire opens up the album and is about the cold war how both the U.S. and U.S.S.R. are ready to fight each other with nuclear weapons, hence the song title. The title track, Ride the Lightning, is a great electrifying attack of guitars and the lyrics are very well written. Opening up with bells, the following track is a metal classic that almost anyone will recognize as For Whom the Bell Tolls. Fade to Black is a beautiful track, and probably my favorite on the entire album and the instrumental, Call of the Ktulu, is another outstanding Metallica classic which ends the album. Ride the Lightning features better production than its predecessor, Kill 'Em All, and is an equal album musically. Grade: A-

Lars Ulrich - Drums
This right here is one of the best thrash albums ever made and is my third favorite personally (after Slayer's Reign in Blood and Megadeth's Rust in Peace). The album opens up with Spanish style guitar playing on Battery before going into the title track, Master of Puppets. A great track with one of the most recognizable riffs in metal. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) starts of slowly with some great singing by Hetfield before becoming a heavy, yet still slow opus. Disposable Heroes and Leper Messiah are 100% heavy metal. This album is great overall all, be it in the music, production, everything. Great work done on it. Grade: A

The Struggle Within
By the time Metallica had released their self-titled album, they were basically a household name. This album, commonly called the Black Album is the most popular among the Metallica albums. This release started them verging off the thrash road and onto the road of more radio friendly music and this aided sales and popularity, though many diehard fans started to fade away. The album opens up with one of the most popular of metal songs, Enter Sandman. Horns open up The Unforgiven, which give way to clean guitar and the song forms into a slow, fist-pumping ballad. Nothing Else Matters is a pretty ballad where James Hetfield shows the beauty in his voice and following that up is another popular metal song Of Wolf and Man. This is a very good album overall, but it foreshadowed the direction that Metallica was going, a direction of softening up musically to increase sales. Grade: B
