Rust in Peace... Polaris
In response to being kicked out of Metallica, Dave Mustaine went on to create a new heavy metal band in hopes that he would be bigger than them. While Megadeth became a household name in the '80s, they never quite matched up to Metallica, even though they are better. In 1990 Megadeth released Rust in Peace, which in my opinion is the second greatest thrash album ever made. The whole album is filled with hooks, leads, and great riffs. Even though it was written 11 years before 9/11, Holy Wars... Punishment Due has become a song for all patriotic metalheads who want to strike back at terrorists. Hangar 18 takes you on a tour through a top secret base that is supposedly indestructible, where technology reigns supreme. Written about WWII, Take No Prisoners is from the perspective of U.S. soldiers near D-Day, wanting to pound their way through the opposition with no mercy. Dawn Patrol is a bass driven song about how mankind is causing its own self-destruction, and the route that they take is from pollution. A great album by one of the best bands in metal today and this is just one of their CDs that you must get. Grade: A

Sweating Bullets
This was My Life
Countdown to Extinction
High Speed Dirt
Psychotron
Captive Honour
Ashes in Your Mouth
In response to Metallica's "Black Album," Megadeth unleashed unto the world Countdown to Extinction. This is a great thrash album and stays true to old school heavy metal. Symphony of Destruction opens up with a symphony tuning up their instruments and leads right into the aural assaut. It features the very catch chorus "Just like the pied piper, Lead rats through the streets, We dance like marionettes, Swaying to the symphony of destruction." Opening up with gunshots and an explosion, Architecture of Aggression continues through the assault. Opening up with an arpeggio, Foreclosure of a Dream slows down a bit but still remains metal. Countdown to Extinction is a great song about how mankind abuses his privileges of being the steward of the earth, and there is a great female spoken part towards the end. The final track, Ashes in Your Mouth ends the album with a very good drum solo. The entire album is filled with great lead guitar and this is also a must have disk for any metalhead, especially if you are an old school one. Grade: A-

Heavy metal, not too much in life is better than that. Reckoning Day starts you off with a pulsating beat that really gets you in the mood for some old school metal. Opening up with drums and having the guitar fade in, Addicted to Chaos is a good metal song, sounding almost like Metallica for a bit. A Tout Le Monde is a great, slow and heavy song with great lyrics. Elysian Fields, The Killing Road, and Blood of Heroes are outstanding back to back to back songs. They all have great guitar parts, especially the leads, and Blood of Heroes opens up with drums and guitar arpeggio before breaking into the metal riffing. The solos on this song really kick. A very, very good metal opus, especially coming from the mid-90s which was the grunge era. Grade: A-

The Disintegrators
I'll Get Even
Sin
A Secret Place

She-Wolf
Vortex
FFF
Cryptic Writings is one of Megadeth's most technical albums. The first track, Trust, opens up with tribal style drum work and soon after the bass comes in. About halfway through there is a break where the guitars start to do arpeggios. Almost Honest has a bass line that stands out very well behind the guitars instead of being overshadowed. Pure speed is what The Disintegrators is all about. In the intro you hear a plane coming down and then the guitars just erupt. The guitar solos in the middle and towards the end are very fast, yet melodically performed. The main drive in I'll Get Even is the bass and the flow of it is 100% Megadeth. Opening up in a sound that is almost like Crazy Train, Vortex swirls you around in metal haven with singing guitar work. This is another great album done by Megadeth and the lyrics are thought out very well. Grade: B+

Time: The Beginning
Time: The End
Metallica fans who are sick of die hard Megadeth's fans complaining about Metallica selling out consider this album Megadeth's sellout time. Granted it is more radio friendly when compared to their other albums, but they never sold out. Opening the album with some feedback and violin, Insomnia works its way into your head with a pounding beat and catchy riffs. Prince of Darkness opens up with a dark bass line and Dave taking the perspective of the Prince of Darkness, Lucifer, in the dialogue part of the song. Enter the Arena paves the way for the blood pumping, adrenaline flowing Crush 'em. Breadline is a very good, rock/metal song with deep lyrics about a business man who once had it all basically, and then lost it because of the depression. The breadline is a term for when people would stand in line to get their food during this time. Time: The Beginning and Time: The End close of the album. The former is an acoustic song with very melancholy lyrics. The latter is back to their roots with some crunchy guitar. Though a very good album, it is very different from every other Megadeth album. This is an album that almost anyone, unless you like that rap crap, can enjoy. Grade: C+

Megadeth finally released a greatest hits album. It features mostly stuff from the 90s, but sadly leaves out some of their best songs. Take No Prisoners, Elysian Fields, The Killing Road, Blood of Heroes are just a few of their great ones that were left out. It does feature some killer tracks though, including two new songs for Deth fans to savor. Kill the King opens up the album with a great guitar riff and the entire song is done great. A good selection of tracks, the album was put together well, but not perfect since they neglected a few of their better tracks. It still is a must have though for Deth fans. Grade: C+

When
The World Needs a Hero is a very good album going back to their old thrash sound and they even resurrected Vic! The last time Vic was seen was on Youthanasia and he was missed. Moto Psycho is a great track with some hooks and a catchy chorus. The intro to 1000 Times Goodbye is an ultra heavy and very catchy riff and the entire song thrashes through very well. The lyrics are also great in that they remind you to not take any B.S. from females. Promises is a beautiful ballad with violin and is a very nice touch for the middle of the album. Dread and the Fugitive Mind was first featured on Capitol Punishment to give you a feel for this album. 12 years after Megadeth took you on a tour through Hanger 18, they lead you on another tour through it. In Return to Hangar you see that the base was not indestructible. The aliens awoke and annihilated all those present and as Dave points out they were "Suspended by their broken necks" and "No one survived to tell the story when (the) foreign lifeforms resurrect." This was a great album as Megadeth was looking to go back to their original sound before their untimely end do to Mustaine's injury. Grade: B+
