| This is Marilyn Manson's debut album which opens up with a nihilistic monologue where he imitates Willy Wonka during the boat scene. Lunchbox is a rock-based song about a kid who is constantly being picked on at school who arms himself with his metal lunchbox to fight of the bully. Organ Grinder features an industrial style beat and is overall a catchy song. Another catchy song is Dope Hat, the beat is more rockish than industrial. In the music video, he is dressed up like Willy Wonka, riding on the boat through the tunnel. Get Your Gunn is a bass driven song, with a heavy rock feel. Sweet Tooth is a good song with an odd bass riff that drives the entire song and Manson runs his vocals through a processor to change them up a bit in parts. Overall this is a good album, especially for a debut, and it has a lot of old rock influences. Grade: B | |||||||||||||||||||||||

| This is Manson's second release, and for the most part it is a remix of a few things from Portrait of an American Family and a few cover songs. Diary of a Dope Fiend is a slower, dirgy version of Dope Hat which is my favorite of the three versions. Kiddie Grinder is a faster version of Organ Grinder which keeps the same industrial style beat, just at a quicker pace. The best song on the album is the cover of Sweet Dreams, which is also one of his greatest songs he has performed. Overall this is a good album to have for the covers, but the only value lies within those, unless you like remixes or are a huge fan. Grade: B | |||||||||||||||||||||||

| This is Marilyn Manson's third album in as many years. It is a very prophetic and true speaking album which aurally assaults you with it angst driven guitars. This is the best of Manson's releases and you can tell that he put a lot of time and effort into it. Beautiful People features a riff that is very catchy and familiar, and the lyrics are catchy as well. With an interesting intro and lots of techno sounds, Cryptorchid, haunts its way into your ears. Manson uses many different vocal styles and closes it by playing a panflute, eerie vocals saying "prick your fingers it is done, the moon has now eclipsed the sun, the angel has spread its wings, the time has come for bitter things" over and over again, with an ostinato beat in the background. It flows right into the industrial driven track, Deformography. Featuring very crunchy guitar and a good solid beat, Angel with the Scabbed Wings, tears into your skin, mostly with the help of Manson's vocals. Antichrist Superstar is probably the most harsh, and best song on the album. It is very heavy with guitars going through both distortion and fuzz effects. He also repeats the lines "Prick your finger, it is done, the moon has now eclipsed the sun, the angel has spread its wings, time has come for bitter things." The ballad, Man that You Fear, is a great song, with a spacy feel to it, and it closes with three different vocal lines doing a round of "When all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed." Within this album lies a lot of truth. Truth about hypocrisy and other issues in life. I highly recommend this album. Grade: A- | |||||||||||||||||||||||

| Two years after Marilyn Manson's top notch release, Antichrist Superstar, he came out with the much anticipated Mechanical Animals. With this album he took a different approach; lyrically, musically, and visually. Mostly it is a more classic rock based album. For most fans it was a let down and the band lost many as a result, even though the music itself is very good. They start the album off with the slow, pretty sounding Great Big White World. Dope Show incorporates a lot of synth sounds into the music, some of the most on the entire album. The most rocky song on the album is Rock is Dead, which still has some synthed parts, but has a very good beat, on the same lines as Beautiful People. Dissassociative is a few notches slower than its predecessor and has a spacey feel to it, and Speed of Pain is on the same lines of Space Oddity by David Bowie. The final track, Coma White, is the best on the disc, and it is a really beautiful song all the way through. This is a good release, and for those who like classic rock, I recommend this album. | Marilyn Manson's Holywood: In the Shadow of the Valley of Death was released in November of 2000, and like Mechanical Animals it was an anticipated release. The band went back to the sound that they had in Antichrist Superstar with a darker approach musically. Following the story line of its two studio predecessors, Holywood is the prequel in the trilogy. Basing the lyrics on human events, Manson relates it to the eruption of school violence that happened the year before, an incident in which he was put to partial blame for, and in the album he shows that violence has more to do with mankind's nature than that of music or other forms of entertainment. The Fight Song has an old school punk rock feel to it and overall is filled with chaos. Disposable Teens has the feel of Beautiful People, with a touch of punk rock in it, but on the metallic edge. In the Shadow of the Valley of Death is a pretty, acoustic piece. Manson's singing voice is good, and the uniqueness makes it beautiful. A good majority of Cruci-fiction in Space features ostinato on the bass by Twiggy Ramirez, which is tastefully done and has a very good sound. Synthesized harpsichord opens up The Nobodies, which is one of the best songs on the album, about people who are put down for who they are. From what I perceive, it could be about Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris who were "nobodies" but soon became infamous for their "massacre" at Columbine High School. The Death Song is very electronic and during the chorus it has a pulsating drive to it. Valentine's Day is a song that is totally Marilyn Manson, and it is one of the best tracks on the disc. The Fall of Adam starts off with acoustic guitar and Manson singing, and in the second half turns into a nihilistic, guitar driven piece with him giving a speech, very dark. This is a very good album and those who liked Antichrist Superstar would like this one a lot. Grade: B+ | |||||||||||||||||||||||
