Fast, furious finish puts Grafton into first
Lindsay Wilde
GRAFTON- For the Grafton Black Hawks girls basketball team, the WIAA Playoffs started off with a bang.  Coming off a tough 39-33 loss at the hands of the Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes, creating a four team tie for the conference championship, the #1 seeded Black Hawks had the privilege of getting a first round bye and resting up for Thursday night's tilt with the Slinger Owls, a very good, young team that had won 15 games in a row coming into the game.  Grafton won the first quarter and led by five after one period, 13-8.  The second quarter, however, would belong to the Owls.  By outscoring the Black Hawks 17-10, Slinger took a two point lead into halftime, 25-23.  After a little dancing at halftime, the fans were ready to go and clearly both teams were as well.  Both squads played to an even 11-11 in the third quarter and the score was 36-34 going into the fourth quarter.  In that fourth quarter, Grafton got some big defensive stops and the play of Rachael Hencke and Lindsay Wilde, before she fouled out in the middle of the quarter, was remarkable.  Clutch free throws by Nicole Brandenburg were able to give Grafton a four point lead with under ten seconds remaining.  Slinger, with no timeouts remaining, was able to hit  their seventh three pointer of the game to cut the deficit to one with six
seconds to go.  The ball was inbounded to senior Leah Wilde and she was fouled with three seconds to go and hit one of two free throws, and time ran out as Slinger was not able to get a desperation shot off.  Slinger was lead by an impressive performance from Seirra West, who scored 17 points in the game, including five three pointers. Grafton was led by sophomore center Rachael Hencke, who scored 21 points, but the play of the game goes to Leah Wilde.  With Grafton down three points late, she hit a huge three to tie the game and bring new life to the team as well as the ridiculously loud Grafton fans.  With the victory, Grafton advances to the Regional final to take on the Pewaukee Pirates at Cedarburg High School at 3:00 on Saturday afternoon.  Please come out and support the Black Hawks and be sure to wear orange!
