Hard To Believe

"What a day - can you believe what happened?"

"Go ahead and say it, I know you want to, get it over
with."

"Say what?"

"You know what, I have it coming."

"If you know it, why should I bother saying it?"

"We both know you want to, so say it already."

"All right - I told you so. There. Are you happy?"

"You did. I didn't think it possible, but it was.
And you knew it. How did you know it?"

"I didn't so much know it as believed it. I had
never seen anything like it either, but I believed it.
There was just something about the whole matter that
made me believe it."

"Well, I saw it with my own eyes and I still don't
know that I believe it. I just can't understand..."

"That makes no sense. You have to believe it - you
were there."

"As sure as I am standing here now I was there, but
it is just so incredible."

"It isn't 'incredible' - just hard to believe. It is
amazing, but not incredible."

"All right - I find it most difficult to believe."

"How can it be hard to believe what you saw with your
own eyes?"

"It just is - things like that don't happen every
day, you know."

"True, but this one did."

"I know, I know it did; but, how?"

"Does it matter?"

"I suppose not. Still, it is mighty hard to
believe."

"What makes it so? Is it that you doubt what you saw
and heard and experienced or that you fear others will
not believe you when you tell them what you know
happened?"

"I suppose I am just so astonished..."

"Remember how they mocked us on that first day? They
thought we were insane and made sport of our feeble
numbers."

"I had my doubts too - but not so many on the first
day as on the sixth. I mean, after all, how much
could they be expected to put up with?"

"We came at the same time and did the same things in
the same ways day after day - had they been of a mind
to destroy us, they surely could have. Or at least
they could have tried."

"We weren't exactly armed to the teeth."

"No indeed. Did you hear about the woman?"

"What woman?"

"The one they brought out?"

"I didn't hear about any woman."

"Yeah, she helped a couple of our people some time
ago and as a reward she was taken away safely when it
happened."

"Hard to believe anyone could live through that -
even us, let alone any of them."

"It was hard for you to believe it would happen
before you saw it, and by your own admission it is
still hard for you to believe it."

"Hard indeed."

"Never before has anything like this happened."

"And I doubt ever again."

"You saw it?"

"I did."

"Yet you still find it hard to believe?"

"Walking around and then shouting. Hard to believe."
