THE ENON ENDEAVOR

VOLUME XXII   January 31, 1999  Number 4

HOSPITAL NEWS:  We are unaware of any of our number in the hospital at this time, but we continue to remember Jesse Brown and his brother and sister-in-law, Tammy Moss, Bertha Johnson, Callie Kilgore, Earnest and Georgia Brackin, Alberta Roney (moved to Wesley Manor in Dothan), Lola King, Mary Elmore, Ruby Merriman, Grace Straight, Blondell Cross and the many others suffering from seasonal illness.

MANY THANKS:  Our deepest appreciation is expressed to GLENN AND LISA RUSSELL AND FAMILY for the now completed work on the new Directories.  They are ready and available one copy per family at the building.

MANY THANKS:  Our appreciation is expressed to GLENN AND LISA RUSSELL for hosting the monthly meal last Sunday Evening.

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?  Hear the Gospel (Romans 10:17), Believe the Gospel (Hebrews 11:6), Repent of Sins (Acts 2:38), Confess Faith in Christ (Acts 8:37), be baptized (Acts 22:16), and remain faithful, even to the point of death (Revelation 2:10).  May we assist you in becoming a faithful Christian?

FEBRUARY 1999

(All information for the daily ledger this month is taken from the DICTIONARY OF MISINFORMATION by TOM BURNAM).

MONDAY  1.............SPEAKING WHERE THE BIBLE SPEAKS Graceba Images Cable 6 7:00 P.M.  The first automobile was not manufactured in the United States, nor was the second.  The Benz Patent Motor Wagon was patented by Karl Benz in Mannheim in 1885; and the Daimler was patented in the same year in Stuttgart by Gottlieb Daimler. Both are German.  Duryeas introduced the first USA car in 1894.

TUESDAY 2............History books notwithstanding, Abraham Lincoln probably did not use an ax to split rails as a lad, but a wedge. Axes were much too precious.

WEDNESDAY 3.....A Bar Mitzvah has nothing to do with circumcision, but is the ceremony which symbolizes the step from boyhood to manhood at age 13.

THURSDAY 4........HAPPY ANNIVERSARY DENNIS AND JOHNNIE TAYLOR!!! Bears are not true hibernators; their body temperatures, heart rates, and breathing does not drop to the levels characteristic of true hibernators. They can, in fact, be awakened quite easily and become fully active in a few minutes.

FRIDAY 5...............SPEAKING WHERE THE BIBLE SPEAKS Graceba Images Cable 6 9:00 A.M.  Did you know that black eyed peas are not peas at all?  They are beans. I guess that's why they go so well with cornbread...

SATURDAY 6.........Many investigations have established that bulls cannot distinguish one color from another.  The only reason a bull would see "red" would be its brightness, not because it is red.

SUNDAY 7............HAPPY BIRTHDAY FLOYD TURK!!! SPEAKING WHERE THE BIBLE SPEAKS Graceba Images Cable 6 1:00 P.M. "The Battle of Bunker Hill" was not fought on "Bunker" or "Bunker's" Hill.  It was fought on nearby Breed's Hill and mistakenly identified without correction.
MONDAY 8...........S.W.T.B.S. Graceba Images Cable 6 7:00 P.M.  Caesar was not killed in the Capitol as many, including Shakespeare, think. He was killed near the statue of Pompey in the Senate House, a quite different place. LADIES BIBLE CLASS:  7:00 P.M. in the annex.

TUESDAY 9...........The mark of Cain was not designed to identify him as a murder.  Quite the contrary, a close reading of Gen. 4:13-15 reveals that it was placed upon Cain to protect him from those who would kill him.

WEDNESDAY 10...Remember Bible Class at 7:00 P.M.  Did you know that camel's hair brushes are never made of camel's hair?  They usually come from the tails of squirrels.

THURSDAY 11......HAPPY BIRTHDAY BLONDELL CROSS!!!  Did you know that "catgut" is not made from the intestines of cats?  It never has been; it comes from the intestines of sheep.

FRIDAY 12.............S.W.T.B.S  Graceba Images Cable 6 9:00 A.M.  Chop suey is not a native Chinese dish.  It originated in a California mining camp when the Chinese cook threw together what was left over and called it chop suey.

SATURDAY 13.......HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEE ANN SMITH!!!  "Cleanliness is next to godliness" is not in the Bible, having been a phrase coined by John Wesley and probably borrowed from one of the Hebrew fathers.

SUNDAY 14...........S.W.T.B.S. 1:00 P.M. Graceba Images Cable 6.  Did you know there were actually 7 women called Cleopatra? None of them were Egyptian, and only the seventh Cleopatra did anything worthy of historical note.

MONDAY 15..........S.W.T.B.S. 7:00 P.M. Graceba Images Cable 6.  Though many think it has near magical sobering qualities, coffee is only an aid in sobering up an inebriated person in that it takes time to drink it, for time alone will allow the alcohol in a persons system to dissipate.

TUESDAY 16.........It is often said that the legs of a colt at birth are as long as they will ever get. Not so.  Although disproportionately long, they do increase in size as the colt grows into a horse.

WEDNESDAY 17....BIBLE CLASS 7:00 P.M. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SETH WIEHE!!!  There is no scientific evidence that copper bracelets offer any help in fighting arthritis.  Though the belief is old, it is unfounded.

THURSDAY 18......It is often said that dreams are never in color, but always in monochrome.  This is simply not so.

FRIDAY 19.............S.W.T.B.S. 9:00 A.M.  Graceba Images Cable 6.  There is no difference in nutritional value or flavor between brown and white eggs.  The white ones just look better to "city-folk".

SATURDAY 20.......The first American fire department was not started by Benjamin Franklin, though he is usually given the credit.  (He did organize the first one in Philadelphia).  In 1659, almost 50 years before Franklin's birth, Peter Stuyvesant distributed 250 buckets plus ladders and hooks in New Amsterdam, and a tax was levied for maintaining the equipment.

SUNDAY 21...........S.W.T.B.S. 1:00 P.M.  Graceba Images Cable 6.  January 1, 1900 wasnot the first day of the twentieth century, and January 1, 2000 will not be the first day of the twenty-first. The new century begins Jan. 1, 2001.

MONDAY 22...........S.W.T.B.S. 7:00 P.M. Graceba Images Cable 6.  Even goats draw the line sometimes!  They will nibble at practically anything, but they will not eat tin cans.

TUESDAY 23..........HAPPY BIRTHDAY LISA RUSSELL!!! The macabre belief that hair continues to grow after death is no doubt based on the fact that there is some tissue shrinkage in a corpse; the hair, thus, may seem to have 'grown' because the skin around each hair has receded somewhat.

WEDNESDAY 24....Bible Class -- 7:00 P.M. A hangnail is not so called because it, or anything about it, "hangs".  ANG, in Old English, meant "pain".

THURSDAY 25.......Headcheese is not cheese at all, but rather portions of the head and feet and other parts of a pig pressed together.  It is not called "cheese" because it tastes like cheese or is cheese-like, but because it used to be molded in the form of a cheese.

FRIDAY 26.............S.W.T.B.S. 9:00 A.M. Graceba Images Cable 6.  Heartburn has nothing whatever to do with the heart despite its name.  Insofar as the term has any medical meaning, the symptoms it purports to describe arise solely from difficulties in the esophagus or stomach.

SATURDAY 27.......India ink is not from India, never was. It's from China, and really ought to be called "China Ink".  As a matter of fact it is... in France.

SUNDAY 28...........S.W.T.B.S. 1:00 P.M. Graceba Images Cable 6.**HAPPY BIRTHDAY C.J. SMITH!!! Although often confused in popular usage, Libel is something that is printed and Slander is something spoken.
