But then Kate had always been headlong and thoughtless, and how could she help but really love David, who was so quiet and steady and strong? And all of a sudden the world turned upside down, for on her wedding eve, Kate eloped with a young lieutenant, and Marcia found herself walking down the aisle in her sister's place, on the arm of a David who seemed just a shell of his old self.

How Marcia, in trying to really take Kate's place, encounters problems and heartaches before she wins lasting happiness is told with sympathy and understanding.
