Mark
Chapter
9 (Continued)
{Jesus'
Second Prediction of His Death and Resurrection}
9:30-31``Then,
having departed from there,
they
passed through Galilee,
and
He {Jesus} did not desire for anyone to know {ginosko}, 9:31``
for
He was teaching {didasko} His disciples and telling them,
"The
Son of Man will be delivered/betrayed {paradidomi}
into
the hands of men.
They
will kill Him and after three days He will rise {anistemi}."
9:32``
But they did understood not { agnoeo }
this
statement and were afraid to ask/interrogate {eperotao} Him.
{Questions
about the Greatest}
9:33``Then
they came to Capernaum.
And,
being in the house, He {Jesus} asked them,
"What
were you
debating/'discussing
among yourselves' {dialogizomai} on the way?"
9:34``But
they were silent {siopao} . . .
for
on the way
they
had debating/'discussing among themselves' {dialogizomai}
who
was the greatest {meizon}.
{Note:
Another indication on the lack of understanding of grace and
spiritual immaturity of the disciples at this point in time.}
9:35``And,
having sat down,
He
{Jesus} called the twelve and said to them,
"If
anyone wants to be first
- and you do - {ei tis - 1st class condition},
he
must be last {eschatos} of all . . .
and
servant {diakonos} of all."
9:36-37``And,
having taken an infant/'little child' {paidion}
He
{Jesus} had him stand among them.
'Taking
him in his arms'/'Embracing him',
He
said to them, 9:37~~
"Whoever
receives/instructs/teaches {dechomai}
one
of these infants/'little children' {paidion}
in
My Name receives Me.
And
whoever receives Me,
does
not receive Me
but
the One Who sent Me {God the Father}."
{On
Jesus' Side}
9:38``Moreover,
John 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai} and said to Him,
"Teacher/Master
{didaskalos},
we
saw/observed a man casting out demons in Your Name
and
we tried to stop him because he was not following us."
9:39-40``So
Jesus said {lego},
"Do
not hinder/stop him {koluo - imperative mood - an order},
because
no one 'who is able to do'/'has the power to do' {dunamis}
{a
miracle} in My Name
will
'be able'/'have the power' {dunamis} soon afterward
to
'speak evil' { kakologeo} about Me 9:40``
for
he who is absolutely not against us
is
'for us'/'for the sake of us'/'for the substitute of us' {huper}."
9:41``
'Point of Doctrine'/'For I tell you the truth' {amen},
whoever
gives you a cup of water in My Name to drink
-
because you keep on belonging to Christ -
he
absolutely will not
{ou me - double negative is very strong negative}
potentially
'lose his reward'/
'have
his reward perish' {apollumi misthos}.
9:42``
"Indeed, whoever may cause
a
lesser one {mikros}
having
believed in Me to sin,
it
would be much better for him
to
have a large millstone {lithos mulikos}
tied
around his neck
and
to be thrown into the sea {thalassa}.
9:43``If
{ean} your hand causes you to sin
-
maybe it does, maybe it does not
{ean - followed by Subjunctive mood} -
'amputate
it'/'cut it off' {apokopto}.
It
is better for you to enter into life mutilated/crippled {kullos},
than
having two hands
and
go into gehenna/hell {geenna} . . .
to
the unquenchable fire {asbestos pur}.
{Note:
Verse 9:44 and 9:46 say the same thing - 'where their worm never
dies and the fire is never quenched' - but it actually is part of
verse 9:48 and not here in the original.}
9:45``If
{ean} your foot causes you to sin
-
maybe it does, maybe it does not -
{ean - followed by Subjunctive mood}
'amputate
it'/'cut it off' {apokopto}.
It
is better for you
to
enter in to life {zao} maimed {cholos}
than
having two feet
and
be thrown into gehenna/hell {geenna}.
{Note:
Verse 9:44 and 9:46 say the same thing - 'where their worm never
dies and the fire is never quenched' - but it actually is part of
verse 9:48 and not here in the original.}
9:47~~If
{ean} your eye causes you to sin
-
maybe it does, maybe it does not -
{ean - followed by Subjunctive mood}
cast
it out {ekballo}.
It
is better for you
to
enter into the kingdom {basileia} of God with one eye,
than
to have two eyes
and
be thrown into gehenna/hell {geenna}, 9:48~~
where
their worm never dies
and
the fire is never quenched 9:49~~
for
everyone will be salted with fire
{salt is used for many things in the bible - here it is used for the
'salt of judgment'}.
{Note:
Hell is the place of the future punishment call "Gehenna"
or "Gehenna of fire". This was originally the name of the
valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where the filth and dead
animals of the city were cast out and burned; a fit symbol of the
wicked and their future destruction. Gehenna is an actually place in
the center of the earth where the souls of the unbelievers will
remain until the Judgment Seat of Christ. It is very hot and
uncomfortable there, but they are alive and conscious. Also, do not
confuse 'hell' with the Lake of Fire. That is the final resting place
made for Satan and his fallen angels. These unbelieving humans will
eventually perish in the Lake of Fire.}
{Doctrine
resident in the soul - Salt}
9:50~~Salt
. . . {is} good {halas kalos}.
But
if {ean} salt has lost its saltiness {reversionism}
-
maybe it does, maybe it does not -
{ean - followed by Subjunctive mood}
how
can you make it salty again?
Have
salt in yourselves {doctrine resident in your soul},
and
be at peace/'inner happiness' {eireneuo}
with
each other of the same kind {allelon}."
