Yui is Miaka's bestfriend who, on the first part of the story, was transported together with Miaka to the world of Ancient China upon opening the book "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho". But since she is not really meant to be in that place, she was transported back to the present world where she followed Miaka's journey by reading the book. The only thing that connects them is their school uniforms. And with it they can communicate with each other . But with a twist of coincidence , while Miaka was then

successfully brought back to the real world, Yui was suddenly surrounded by a blue light and was pulled back in the book world.
     She finds herself in the strange country of Kutou. Being alone, she tried to call   for Miaka's help. But since at that time, Miaka took her uniform off to look for Yui in their house, Miaka didn't hear her. Two men attacked Yui and tried to rape her. She kept shouting for help, calling out Miaka's name repeatedly. While struggling, Yui suddenly fell unconcious. Upon awakening she finds herself in the Emperor's palace with the Kutou Shogun named Nakago taking care o her. Nakago then fabricated a story telling Yui that she was raped. Yui tried to kill herself upon knowing this but she was saved. Nakago then started to brainwashed Yui, instilling in her mind that Miaka betrayed her and never really cares whatever would happen to her. He wanted Yui to hate Miaka so that she'll accept his offer to be   their Seiryuu No Miko. When Miaka did came back to the book world to save her from the hands of Nakago,   she   overheard   Miaka telling Tamahome that she came back for him. Yui misinterpreted Miakas words otherwise prompting her to accept Nakago's offer to be the Seiryuu No Miko. She believes that Miaka is the cause of all her sufferings and that her friend never really cared for her.
     Yui is an intelligent girl, far more intelligent than Miaka who only likes to sleep in class. She's always excelling in her academics and was looked upon by Miaka. But one thing that was not good about her is that she seem to use her head more than to really look inside her heart. This characteristic becomes a wall that separates her even more to Miaka. Yui can be easily won by people who knows how to give a rational explanation.   This makes her susceptible to the manipulations of Nakago. She can be easily persuaded by just giving her a concise and clear narration even though it is not true. She only sees what is in the surface without even bothering to know what is beneath that surface. And she only relies to what she thinks her mind can conceive and not her heart.
     Yui's   journey   to   Ancient   hina brought many changes not only to her friendship with Miaka but to her perspective in life.
