BACK
Sir William Stephenson, the Canadian who had headed British counter intelligence during the Second World War, and on whom the book and film "A Man Called Intrepid" was written, is also buried in this church yard.
He had located the trans-Atlantic mail censors in Bermuda, at the Princess Hotel, during the war, primarily searching for any secret communications, lurking in normal post, and from which the identity and location of Axis spies in North America might be gleaned.
Settling on the island after the war, taking, for a time, the top floor of the Princess, then moving into his own home, he was often visited by old cronies, including
James Bond author Ian Fleming, and he was buried at Saint John's Church when he died.
