Coastal defences. An RAF Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft. It's predecessors would have been assigned to RAF Coastal Command, though today the greatly reduced RAF has vastly simplified its command structure and Coastal Command, like Fighter and Bomber Commands, no longer exists. It is chiefly interesting to note the word 'coastal' as on the hill top beyond, at the right of the photograph, is visible a Martello tower, the only one surviving in the colony. Built circa 1840, it was the first fort constructed of the native hardstone, and provided 360 degree traverse for a single gun to defend Ferry Reach,  both the Western End of Saint George's island, on which it sits, and the water visible between.
The aircraft is siting on Apron 1 of the Bermuda International Airport, Circa 1999.
