BRILLIANT YOUNG BERMUDIAN GONE TO THE FRONT

Another young Bermudian who has made a record for himself, is Mr. Wilfred S.E. Smith, son of the late Jos. J. Smith and Mrs. Annie Smith, of Durnford, St. George's. Young smith left St. George's some years ago and obtained a position in the Yonge St. Branch at Toronto of the Bank of Montreal. Previous to leaving St. George's he earned a reputation as a sportsman--cricket, shooting and boating being his particular lines. When 18 years of age he distinguished himself by stroking the winner of the 140lb four of the Argonauts Rowing Club in the open Championship of Canada. Last year he was sent to Boston where he stroked his boat, which was the winner of the contest for which she entered. During the summer just passed he stroked the Argonauts Rowing Club eight to victory. He is considered one of the best strokes in Toronto and possesses a dozen gold medals , besides other trophies won in the different events in which he has competed; besides being a sportsman he is a soldier and has just gone to Europe with the Queen's Own Rifles, with whom he has been in camp in Valcarter, Ontario for some time, and during his trainingdistinguished himself as a marksman and had the honour of being selected to fill a position in the machine gun detachment of his regiment. We trust that on his return to Canada he will have earned other medals to add to the dozen gold ones already in his possession.
