Young heroes honored by Cobb Fire
(Marietta, Ga. December 10, 2003) Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services will honor two young girls for their courage during a house fire, which resulted in seven lives saved. Chief Becky Denlinger will present plaques to the girls on Dec. 19, 8:15 a.m., at Nickajack Elementary School, 4555 Mavell Road in Smyrna.

On Nov. 27, 11-year-old Kayla Sapp, a sixth-grader at Lindley Middle School, and her sister, 10-year-old Kimberly Sapp, a fourth-grader at Nickajack Elementary, were in the back bedroom of their Smyrna home watching TV when they smelled and noticed smoke coming from the heat register. They then alerted the two adults in the living room. By then, the light smoke had turned to heavy black smoke.

The smoke detector was not sounding at this time because it was not in the vicinity. The girls alerted their two older sisters in the kitchen and the other adult in the house, encouraging everyone to leave immediately and meet outside. Once outside, the girls told everyone not to go back in the house.

Our Fire and Life Safety Education Division teaches fire safety in all the elementary schools in the county. Some of the main points taught are to immediately leave the building, meet at a pre-determined place and to resist the urge to re-enter the building, Cobb Fire Division Chief Terry Martin said. It appears from the testimony of the parents that Kayla and Kimberly did exactly as they were taught at school. Of course, teaching fire safety is one thing, but the courage displayed by these two young girls in the midst of an emergency is another, and it should be commended.
