An Irish Blessing is repeated by request
ROMA DOWNEY
May he watch over you and keep you safe from harm
You are an important part of God's plan
And may you come to realize that Insignificant as you
may seem in this great Universe
May you understand the strength and power of God
In a thunderstorm in Winter and the quiet beauty of
creation In the calm of a Summer sunset
May the blessing of God's earth be on you
And as you walk the roads may you always have
a kind word for those you meet
May the strength of the winds of Heaven bless you
Carrying the rain to wash your spirit clean
  Sparkling after in the sunlight
May the blessing of God's soft rain be on you
Falling gently on your head, refreshing your soul
With the sweetness of little flowers newly blooming
May the Light of the Lord shine from your eyes
Like a candle in the window
  Welcoming the weary traveller
May your heart glow with warmth
Like a turf fire that welcomes friends
  and Strangers alike.
May the blessing of Light be upon you
Light on the outside...Light on the inside
With God's sunlight shining on you

Bob had successful heart surgery on February 9,
to replace his aortic valve. (The opening, which should
be about the size of a quarter was only opening to the
size of a pea.). The surgery was performed at Fairfax
Hospital in Virginia and Bob would welcome communi-  ations.

Dick, I really enjoyed the picture of Bernie Horn and
Dan Tuite in February's HasBeens. It was especially
good to see Bernie looking so well in his retirement.
My fondest memories of Bernie was him sending
money with the GPO messengers over to Senate
Appros. when I was on detail so I could buy flags for
him from the Senate stationery store. I received one of
those flags from him on my retirement and it has a
cherished spot in my den.
I also remember the days when Dan used to come to
Lake Anna and hated to leave at the end of the week-
end so much that he would get up at 3 o'clock Monday
morning to be at work. Tell Dan I'm still loving retire-
ment on Lake Anna.      ~~ Bob
From Florida . . . Lloyd Beasley
Dick those 2 pictures in the February edition bring back
some good memories. I went to Cleveland as a dele-
gate with good ole Jesse. He was quite the character
and a very knowledgable person to have around and
boy did he know the laws and rules at the ITU Conven-
tion.I sat next to him on the floor in Cleveland.
The other picture of the Mono Macke softball winners,
I have the original hanging in my den along with the
softball signed by all the players.
I was  working on the hill when GPO took the trophy
case down that had been hanging outside of the
security cage next to Mono Keyboard and since I had
been the manager they asked me if I wanted them
Koubek is the only player I see anymore on my trips up.
Sorry, I have to miss out on the morning breakfast, as
my trips seem never to coincide with them. Hopefully
I will see you this June. Still loving it down here in
sunny Florida.   ~~  Lloyd
The movement was spread and newly accepted by the
employees of the Railway workers who formed and or-
ganized as Local 101 Amalgamated Association of
Street Railway Employees of America, which was or-
ganized during that summer of 1900, The Trades
Unionist reported that the street railway men of the
District want to be part of the labor movement and in
their words "take kindly to the idea of being members of
a labor organization.
Should we return to that year 1900?
During the year 1900 the labor movement was actively
aggressive in organizing. It was alive with comradeship.
It was concerned with the plight of unfortunate workers.
The labor unions were on the move in all working areas.
But meanwhile, all was not well in America. The same
issue of The Trades Unionist reported other workers in
many areas were being treated as slaves of corpora-
tions.workers were forced to accept 72 cents for ten
hours work.
They wrote of the plight of miners who were finding it
necessary to strike in the coal regions against utterly
barbaric conditions.
Working conditions and payment for workers was im-
proving but the cost of goods was also on the rise
making attractive offers of meals at sparsely attended
establishments as an example Oyster Roasts were
advertised for 10 cents with Highballs, any time day or
night, one eatery close by was Driscolls Restaurant
located across from the GPO at North Capitol and G Sts.
Later in that summer the Typographical Union leader
argued strongly in The Trades Unionist on the subject
of a formation among working men of a non-partisan
organization for political purposes; an organization of
voters who will vote as a body for the man or set of men
who will do utmost for the bidding for the workforce.
The individuals selected would be of any party affiliation.
The typos delegate was quoted as saying, this is a
possible day-dream with too much hope that it can be
realized.
In 1900 the standing officers of Columbia Typographical
Union #101 were President; E.A.M. Lawson; Vice-Presi-
dent; W.V. Smith, Corresponding and Recording Sec-
retary; Wm. M. Garrett; Financial Secretary; vacant,
Treasurer; J. F. McCormick.
This time period was also familiar with the importance
of goods carrying the Union Label One such problem
arose in November 1900: the Robert Porter Brewing Co.
of Alexandria, Va., was declared unfair because the
company refused to sign a contract or recognize the
Brewery Workers in any manner. Their beverage was
successfully boycotted as it was declared anti-union
and could not carry the label whereas the Brew dropped
off the market.
Also in that same paper of November 15, 1900, The
Trade Unionist reported that the Washington Brick-
layers Union won a strike against their employers who
were working on the job site at the U.S. Capitol building.
Bricklayers were alleged subject to illegal working
infractions for their stand against the employers
demands requiring the men to violate the eight hour
work rule. The union won the decision where the re-
quirement was upheld and the pay was adjusted and
they returned to work.
On the Labor Day of 1901 in Maryland at Glen Echo Park
a celebration was observed where more then twenty
thousand people attended for the purpose of par-
ticipating in the Labors Holiday outing. The Trade
Unionist reported it was an overwhelming enjoyable
family celebration with numerous athletic events taking
place including fancy dancing, cake walks, and wheel-
barrow races by the ladies.
There was an address given during the ceremony by Central Labor Union President Feeney. As reported 1he 1900s would be history in the making for the labor
movement!

BORN AGAIN AMERICAN
~~ Issue 2: GPO Gym Cancelled - Last year, GPO
proposed the idea of establishing a fitness center
(gym), however the Joint Committee on Printing
(JCP) declined approval of money to be spent.
Answer: GPO should have had it built near
Pelosis Office where she could have put it in the
Stimulus then, it would have been approved.
