| Children's Closet History In 1999, the First Congregational Church was given an endowment with the understanding that the money was to be spent within a two-year period and that it would serve those in the community in need. During these two years it became clear that there was a much greater need in the Greater Portland area among children than had previously been realized. Six women from the church formed a committee and in September of 2001, the concept of The Childrens Closet was born. The Closet offers free clothing, diapers and "gear" to anyone with a need - no questions asked. The Greater Portland Mothers and Dads Group took over The Children's Closet in September of 2004. We continue to encourage the donation of children's clothing, shoes, toys, and equipment such as highchairs, cribs, bouncy seats, etc. Special arrangements can be made if you would like to donate large amounts or if someone in the community is in desperate need of items when the closet is not open. At this time we are no longer in charge of running the Children's Closet, although we still support it through donations and seasonal change-over help. Interested in volunteering? The Children's Closet it is a great way to meet the needs of others in our community while including your own children. The Children's Closet is in a large gym where children are able to run, play, enjoy the toys that are there, and the company of other children. You can commit to volunteer as little as one week a year or as much as 4 weeks a month. It is up to you. We sometimes meet when the Closet is not open to the public to organize and sort items that were donated. If you are interested in volunteering or if you need more information about the Closet, you can call the First Congregational Church in South Portland. |
