Letter of recommendation from a former employer ---

Dear California Voter:

Gerald came to work for me in 1988.  We were expanding our demolition and site clearance operations throughout the Midwest region.  Since he is my brother-in-law, I knew that he could help in many ways.  Hes one of the smartest people I know.  He brought our company into the computer age, wrote all our corporate programs, documents, contracts, and operation manuals.  With just a computer and some paper he put together a marketing campaign that impressed Fortune 500 clients and got us projects.

When he started, we were doing about $500,000 worth of business each year.  He asked me where I wanted to take the company.  I told him I wanted to be able to take on the big jobs --- million dollar contracts.  He made that his goal.  He made the road trips, met with potential clients, bid jobs, negotiated contracts, project managed crews, and doubled our business that very first year.

His jobs always came in under budget and often finished before the deadlines.  The profits from each job let us grow without going into debt.  Gerald wrote new brochures, contacted new clients, bid jobs and got new contracts.  When he left the company, we had just gotten our first million dollar job and once again had doubled our yearly business.

Would Gerald make a good Governor?  Could he deal with a budget that is in trouble?  On the last job we bid together I missed a major part of the project.  When they opened the bids, we were half the price of the next lowest bidder.  Doing the job was going to cost me a lot of money.  When Gerald found out what happened, he came back and managed the job.  Found in new subcontractors for less money.  Installed a few hundred square feet floor tile by himself.  And did something I thought was impossible.  Finished the project on time and made a profit.
