The pictureous city of Abbottabad is known for its prestigious schools and
colleges. Apart from its scenic beauty, it is known for its neat and clean
environment ,fresh and healthy of chinars , hence ,very conductive place
for serious study and learning.
In the center of this unrevealed
city, stands the prestigious institution of Government Postgraduate
College No.1 Abbottabad.It is tower of learning which have been spreading
its light for more than half a century. This college was established in
1944 in a rented building on mansehra road. after independence, its sight
was shifted to the heart of the city in Araya school. In 1954 ,The
honorable Chief minister of N.W.F.P. Khan Abdul Qayyum Khan laid
foundation stone of the present magnificent building at link road.the
building has large, spacious and ventilated class rooms,well-equipped
science laboratories, air conditioned computer labs. and well maintained
libraries. It has vast play ground for sports, hotels, mosque and
cafeteria buildings. In the beginning the college imparted education up to
F.A./F.Sc and B.A. level. later on,B.sc. classes comensed in 1955.since
than the college has rapidly progressed.
In 1965,the college had M.sc. physics
and M.A. economics classes.In 1973,M.A. English, Urdu and M.Sc. Chemistry
and Maths were introduced. In 1986 M.Sc. Botany and M.A. Political Science
department were added. In 1999,M.Sc. computer science was further added in
the postgraduate level. Now it is rightly called a mini university. The
college has provided quality education to more than 2300 students from !st
year to 6th year in 24 common subjects in Science and Arts. Girls students
are admitted to only postgraduate classes.
The college is affiliated to university of
Peshawar and B.I.S.E. Abbottabad.the college has been catering for the
development of literary skills and creative trends of its students. The
college publishes it magazine "The Kaghan"almost every year
which is a splendid manifest of creative talents of its students.
The college encourages healthy activities of its
students in the fields of games and sports, social welfare and youth
cultural developments
