You Made this Card!

The letter I! started this create-a-card on the mtgnews.com forums.

It was more experimental at first than anything else, but I needed help creating Lore and you answered my cry for help.  I was a little disappointed at how few people responded, but the response was strong enough to create a card,

Now for the wrap up..

We started by choosing the type of permanent.  No one voted for Artifacts or Enchantments.  Two of you voted for Creature, two for Instant, one for land, and one for sorcery.  Creature and Instant tied, so I broke the tie and went for creatures.  Creatures have more room for development, anyway.

Next we voted on color.  I knew there would be no ties this time, since a tie would result in a multicolored creature.  Due to this, I also allowed you to vote for multiple colors.  One voted for white, one for blue, five for black, two for red, and two for green.  Black won.

The next step took two threads.  I first asked for mechanic ideas.  These were the submitted mechanics:

Card Mechanic A - At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose one life.  Then put a +1/+1 counter on ~.

Card Mechanic B - Creatures your opponents control get -1/-1.  ~ gets +1/+1 for each creature your opponents control.

Card Mechanic C - At the beginning of your upkeep, discarrd a card.  If a black card is discarded this way, put a +1/+1 counter on ~.

Card Mechanic D - At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player sacrifices a non-black permanent.  M: Target permanent is black until end of turn.

Card Mechanic E - M, remove ~ from the game: Put a card from outside the game into your hand.  M, Remove a card in your hand from the game: Return ~ to your hand.  Play this ability only if ~ has been removed from the game.

Then you voted.  Two for A, three for B, none for C, two for D, one for E.  Our card now had a mechanic.  I had to make a choice.  Our card would need to be Legendary in order to be fair.  It was time to help choose a name.

Two names were submitted-- Ercon, Thief of Vitality, and Ilmya, Stealer of Breath.  You also voted on power and toughness in this step.  No one wanted a 1/1, one wanted a 2/2, no one wanted a 2/1, one wanted a 3/1, and four wanted a 3/2.

I had to make a choice.  Our card would need to be Legendary in order to be fair.

This vote went well.  Three of you wanted Ercon, and seven wanted Ilmya.  A pretty clear-cut victory.

At this point all voting was over.  I chose the mana cost and found art for it.  I chose the Minion creature type, and then created the card.

Many of you have probably already seen this card.  But here it is, displayed on the official Lore Block website.

Ilmya, Stealer of Breath

Not a bad job.  The card looks great and has a great new ability, and a name that fits really well.  I can't wait to do the next one of these!
