Throughout it's history, Orissa nurtured a rich and envious religious cultural heritage. All across the streets of towns and cities of Orissa, almost the entire range of arts and crafts depicting this distinct cultural heritage is amply evident. The crafts of Orissa are gloriously alive, suited to modern tastes & at the same time retaining all the traditional ingredients of the Odissi culture. The Oriya craftsman is an indispensable link in an unbroken chain of producers and consumers within a socio-religious framework. Tribal culture has always been an integral part of religion in Orissa, even anywhere in India and so as reflected in many of the crafts & arts.

Folk Art:- The word PATACHITRA is derived from the Sanskrit word Patta, which means a painted piece of cloth, a picture,a tablet or a plate. Chitra means painting or picture. Finely executed Patachitra characterizes Folk tales and fine art-n-craft elements. The Patachitras are paintings executed by steady hand with fluidity on cloth. In the absence of paper, cloth gives an extended smooth surface for painting & washing the excess colour. PALM LEAF paintings goes way back to the history of ancient Orissa. In Orissa, the Palm Leaf illustrations are mainly of two types, simple engravings or illustrations in pure line on palm leaf and engraving with colour fillings. The palm leaf engravings consist of frozen linear drawing as illustrations of manuscripts. In these engravings, colours play a very insignificant part. Only to emphasize the inscriptions, or to fill up blank space. Manuscripts were written on palm leaves even during the Mughal era. Strips of palm leaf are collected from trees and then sorted on the basis of size, shape, colour and texture. These are then dried and stitched together with a string. In the limited space of the oblong palm leaf with a small width, paintings r completed with minute details. Even though mainly those are religious, sometimes different animals, flowers and trees are executed with great precision and beauty. These arts are first engraved by a sharp iron stylus and it requires a remarkably steady hand to be able to wield this tool on thin strip of leaf, then light black colour is applied to make it distinct. The themes of the TRIBALpaintings are usually dream sequences. Orissa has a rich tribal culture. A collection of objects such as a comb or even a bicycle map figure in modern tribal paintings. The Kondh wall paintings are generally in the form of geometrical designs. Santals also paint their houses with figurative patterns. These are the tribal culture narration of orissa who use to paint there language of puja in the walls of there house in the occasions for there believe that it will make them grow high and make everything in shape and with good moods. Tribes such as Bhils, Bondas, Murias, Saoras, Kondhs are known for their paintings. In TUSSERpainting, silk material is used as a canvas-base to paint beautiful eye cathcing images. The subtle use of colours make them truly exotic. Glass paintings on this website are executed with oil and hard resin or with watercolor and gum on glass sheets. However, in general there r a wide variety of Glass paintings like tainted glass, stained glass, glass etching etc., which may not be featured on this site.

HandiCrafts:- Most of the appliqué art featured here perfected by the artisans of Pipili, a village 40 km west from Puri on the Bhubaneswar-Puri route, used to decorates homes, rooms in various parts of the world. Appliqué work in Orissa is originated as a temple art. Coloured cloth, after being cut and shaped into the forms of birds, animals, flowers, leaves, and other decorative motifs is stitched onto a cloth piece designed as Wall hangings, Garden or Beach umbrella, Lamp shade, Kids sun umbrella and other utility items. Since the past decade or so,Chandua and household linen in appliqué work are also being produced in increasing numbers. Tiny mirrors in a whole range of geometrical shapes and designs are put together by embroidery to create a striking work of art. Traditional colours such as white, red, yellow and black are used. Recently green, blue, violet & Orange has been added in modern designs. Besides Puri, appliqué work is also practised to some extent in Chitki, Barpali and a few other places in SambalPur area.

Sculptures :- The story of Orissa art and sculpture dates back to the Indus valley civilization of the 2nd and 3rd millennium BC. The original statues, seals are still worshipped in older temples and shrines. These are again reproduced by the skilled workmanship to be used in many different places like temples, homes, houses, hotel, garden decorations which give a unique, peaceful look all the time. Sculptures in Orissa have been employed for both religious and secular purposes. Sculptures are executed in BRASS, STONE, SILVER and WOOD. The SILVER Items are the world famous filigree works of Cuttack about 20Kms from Capital city Bhubaneswar. The work continues from generations with there skills and effort. The concentration & craftmanship executed in these works a truely breathtaking. BRASS casting is done by the Kansaris (Group that specializes in the brass skills)and items produced include Idolic icons; mainly ShreeRadha, ShriKrishna, MahaLakshmee, pot bellied ShriGanesha, MahaVishnu and crawling Krishna(Bala Gopal) called Gurundi Gopal, bells, lampstand or rukha and lamps or dipa. It is interesting to note that at present there is no bronze casting being done in Orissa, although the craft seems to have reached great perfection centuries ago as evidenced for the discovery of a large number of bronze icons from Achutarajpur near Banapur in Puri District.STONE carving is one of the major handcarving industries of Orissa. WOOD carving is another important handicraft of Orissa. This again can be broadly grouped into three sub-groups painted wood carvings, plain wood carvings and wood turned household decorating items. Here featured are painted wooden toys, idols and chariot decorations. Usually light varieties of wood are preferred fo r this crftmanship. The art is mostly practiced by the carpenter caste in Orissa who have the title Moharana. They use the simple carpentry tools like hammer, chisel etc.
