WOODWARD-FREED FAMILY OF KANSAS, THE SUNFLOWER STATE

This website has been constructed for the extended families of John "Gary" Woodward, Sr. and Eva "Pauline" Gilman/Freed. Gary and Pauline dated when they were in high school, from 1947 to 1949. They broke up after graduation in 1949, because Pauline and her mother moved to Enid, Oklahoma, where Pauline attended Phillips University. Gary went to Lawrence, Kansas, where he attended the University of Kansas. Eventually, they each married someone else and had separate families.

Gary married (1st) Ruth Mateel Peak on Palm Sunday, March 29, 1953, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Atchison, Kansas. They had six children: (1) "John" Gary, Jr.; (2) Michael/"Mike" Lance; (3) Susan Ruth; (4) David/"Dave" Alvin; (5) Mary Elnora; and (6) Joshua/"Josh" Matthew. Ruth died February 15, 1998 at the Colonial Manor nursing home in Lansing, Kansas.

Pauline married (1st) Carl Webb Freed,August 30, 1952, in Springfield, Missouri. They had three sons: (1) Stephen/"Steve" Webb; (2) David/"Dave" Milton; and (3) Robert Gilman. Carl was killed in a tractor accident, April 26, 1978, on his farm a few miles south of Lansing, Kansas.

After they were both widowed, Gary and Pauline were united again, first at church and, then, to attend his high school class reunion together. They were married on New Years Day, Friday, January 1, 1999, at the First Christian Church in Leavenworth, Kansas.

As of this date, Gary has six children, five in-law children, 11 grandchildren, three in-law grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren for a total of 29 members in his family. Pauline now has her three sons, three daughters-in-law, and six grandchildren for a total of 12 members in her family. So, altogether, there is now a grand total of 41 members in their two extended families combined. About the only time of the year, when they can all gather together at the same time is Thanksgiving Day.
