The Wadsworth Stable
HOME
History....The Wadsworth Stable, designed in classic Palladian style, was originally located on the estate of Colonel Jeremiah Wadsworth in Hartford.  Colonel Wadsworth's mansion was the location of the first meeting between General Washington, General Rochambeau, commander of the French Army, and Governor Jonathan Trumbull in September 1780.  Their horses would have been housed in a stable on the Wadsworth property.  In 1842, Daniel Wadsworth, son of Jeremiah Wadsworth, commissioned the building of the Wadsworth Atheneum on the site of the house.  The Wadsworth mansion was relocated to another street and later torn down.  The only relic of this historic house that remains is a small panel from the room where the conference was held, now at the Connecticut Historical Society.

The Wadsworth Stable remained on the original site near the Atheneum until 1954 when it was slated for demolition.  A state-wide campaign raised funds to move and restore the stable.  The Connecticut Society Daughters of the American Revolution offered a site on the grounds of the Governor Jonathan Trumbull House in Lebanon where the stable was relocated and restored in 1954.  Colonel Wadsworth served with distinction as Commissary General of the Continental Army, 1789-1779, and as the chief agent in supplying the French Army.

More about the stable... The Wadsworth Stable is a building of unusual architectural interest.  The elaborate design is in a pure Palladian style, making it a rare example of a high-style outbuilding.  The stable represents an age when the horse was the primary form of land transportation.

Tradition dates the stable to 1730; other sources attribute it to Daniel Wadsworth, circa 1810-1820.  Daniel Wadsworth, noted founder of the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford was married to Faith Trumbull, daughter of Jonathan Trumbull, Jr.

Jeremiah Wadsworth
A little known fact...Jeremiah Wadsworth was the largest donor to the "Hartford State House" Building Committee which raised the funds in 1973 to build what we know today as "The Old State House" in Hartford.  He donated $500, while the Mayor of Hartford, Thomas Seymour contributed $150.00.
