Although it is believed that the first inhabitants reached the Hawaiian Island in 400 AD, Captain Cook is concidered to have discovered the islands on January 20, 1778. He first landed at Waimea, Kauai.
Early Hawaiian society is thought to have been split into four levels.
-Alii who were the cheifs
-Kahuna who were priests
-Makaainana who were laborers
-Kauwa who were outcasts

Background is Hawaii's first king to unite all the islands, King Kamehameha.
