Oil on canvas. 30 December 1995. 50 x 65." This large canvas took many weeks to paint and that, in part, accounts for the limited number of works produced in 1995. It is perhaps the best example of the group of paintings that feature figures that appear to be connected to the fields on which they are depicted. Many people call these works Dennis's "Snake Paintings," but the artist does not view them that way. He simply states: "I was looking for a picture element that would easily associate with the background of the painting and provide depth at the same time by overlapping other figures." If you follow a "snake," see how it appears to swoop or swim and change colors all the while remaining true to a constant light source. The paint in this work is loosely applied and each color area is made up of many different hues. |
