Finches are small birds that rage from 3 1/2" to  6" in size, unlike softbills that come in a wider range of size and shape.Finch beaks are designed to crack and cull seeds. Seed is their main diet however they do eat soft foods and insects as well. Some finch turn highly insectivore when raising young, like waxbills for instance. Waxbill, when breeding,  will starve their young if not supplied with the proper amount of live food.
Cutthroat pair (Amadina fasciata)
Although finches are not known to be tame creatures and do not entertain us with an unlimited vocabulary like some hook bill and softbill species do, they are fascinating creatures to watch as they interact with each other as most finches are well suited for a mixed aviary, there are  exceptions however. Many finches have a pleasant song to keep us entertained.
Red Headed /Throat Parrot Finch (Erythrura psittacea)
Finches are not as demanding on space for they are small therefore making them an ideal pet for most, however it is best to keep them in as big a cage as possible. They do best in a large flight or aviary. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting in front of an aviary watching finch interact as if they were in the wild! Aviculturist thrive on giving their birds the most natural environment possible to ensure healthy happy birds that will in turn reward us with young, the biggest thrill achieved in this hobby - especially when working with hard to breed rare species!
