Volunteer Work. I Do It..... Do You?

For many months now have been making time to do some volunteer work. At first I was not sure I would enjoy it. I knew I liked helping others and that in this case also helping animals but cinsidering I hate housework.....going out to purposely Clean just seemed off a bit.

Well yesterday was another day of vcolunteering and if you have never done any volunteer work I suggest finding a cause/place you like and giving it a try. It is very rewarding.

For me and my son we do our volunteer work at an animal sanctuary in our general area(not around the corner but love this place so driving is not an issue). We have been doing the same work there since we started with sometimes being asked to do a little different things as needed but for the most part we work with the dogs. This place is not really equiped for dogs but take them in anyways as they do not appear to ever turn any animal away. So when we are there we clean out kennels, scrub floors, fill water bowls, sweep down spider webs, clean up 'accidents', bleach walkways and so on. Yes we are dead tired when we leave but is a good tired feeling. We also get to love on the dogs that are there. They are thrilled with the attention. Many of them I would take home in a heart beat if it were possible. (I have 2 OLD tiny dogs so bringing another home specially larger right now is not possible.)

The lady that runs it is a living doll or angel... cant decide which. Her heart is much larger than her tiny petite self. You can tell she genuinely loves all the critters and all the folks that come there to do community service and volunteer too. I know it can not be easy to run a facility like this with it being so varied in type of animal and given the number of animals there. They get lots of donations but not nearly what is really needed. We try to always take in some stuff each time even if just jugs of bleach and trash bags and such which are always needed. Above all the Things needed she hurts for having folks give their Time more than anything. With so many to care for the people that do come in are stretched pretty thin.

All that said again donating time to a place like this or any number of other places that always are in need of volunteers couldbe one of the most rewarding things you will ever do if you do not do so already. I encourage everyone to get out and give it a try. Does not have to be 100 hours a week or anything like that. Or find out what shelters/sanctuary places and such need donations of items and then see what you have about the house that you dont need or want anymore anyways. Every little bit helps. And it Does make a difference.

Good for you!! That is wonderful that you guys have the time. I think too few people care about anything but themselves. Do you truly have a pig living in your house?? Too funny, how do they ummm....go to the bathroom? litter box, outside? We have cats almost as large as yours, so of course I had to look at your pics...

Yes I did have a pig in my house. There are some posts about him a couple months back with photos and such. When he was a baby he lived in the house. And on the potty issue when Tiny went on puppy pads and I had trained him to go outside. That picture of him (Lincoln Hog) sleeping under the chair with my poodle(Payton) was just before we moved him outside. He then had a big pen with a sleeping ledge and room to run and his own kiddie pool that he loved to play in.
Sadly I had to have him put down a couple months back when a pit bull got in our yard and attacked him. I was devestated. I had waited 6 years to have a pig and I got him at 3 weeks and hand fed him. He was 1 year and 2 days old when attacked and put to sleep so I did not get to have my piggy long enough.

I find that even when I don't have the time to join an organization, I'll always have an hour to spare visiting people who are otherwise lonely. They appreciate the company more than you realize.

What a wonderful thing for you and your son to do. I own a small petting zoo and do animal rescue. The rewards far out weigh the time it takes to love so many precious pets.

It began with Easter bunnies and just grew! I have had as many as 78 animals. It takes a lot of LOVE, time, effort and money. That is why volunteers are so important.

Bless you for all your love, support and gift to those special animals.

And so sorry about Lincoln Hog.

Jen that is wonderful and exactly my point. You dont have to do a Huge amount because it often take just a little time/consideration and such to make a Big difference to a person/animal or organization.

Emotional Rescue..we used to raise/breed small animals (Guineapigs and smaller)and at that time we also took in rescues of tiny critters when we could and it Is a lot of work. Am sure you stay busy having a petting zoo.
Thanks also ..I really miss my pig and have thought about maybe getting another but just not sure it would be the same....and am just not ready yet either...who knows maybe will get another one one day.
