Live Review

Go To Bed Jessica Ettalong Hotel. 28/7/01

Sometimes you can be really lucky. Go To Bed Jessica have been gathering quite a reputation around the Central Coast as THE up and coming band. Tonight it was pouring with rain, but still worth a trip to Ettalong to catch them in the local band competition.

Id seen them once before months ago, and the improvement is staggering. A powerhouse trio in the traditional rock format of guitar, bass, drums and passion, their originals like Biting Again and Im Sick are showing the benefit of recent live experience. Apparently theyre also in the state finals of the University band comp, and this gig showed why.

The whole set was largely originals with a stunning sonic explosion of Black Sabbaths War Pigs and an intelligent 21st century reworking of the legendary Big Star classic In the Street showing where their inspiration lies. New songs like the wonderful Pixie confirmed that this is a band with a real future.

Band comps like this restore your faith in rocknroll. You get the chance to see dynamic acts like Go To Bed Jessica in a situation where everything hangs on one gig. They go for it and seize the moment, with the result that you witness one of those rare moments of true rock greatness where opportunity, passion, belief and ability all explode simultaneously.

Of course they won. The chances of seeing two bands that good on a wet Saturday night in Ettalong are fairly remote. Just remember, you read about them here first!
