Go to Bed Jessica, named after a phrase used in a drink driving commercial, will take any oppurtunity to get on stage - especially if there is prize money and recording time at stake.
"We just love playing," said frontman-guitarist Cameron Singh, 24.
"But band competitions can be a really good way to get yourselves known and get stage experience."
First there was the Ettalong Beach Hotel contest followed by the Central Coast Live and Raw. They won both. But it was the national university band competition that set them on a road to fame.
After winning the Newcastle University Heat that year, they came second in the state finals. One of the judges was Singh's childhood hero. INXS guitarist Tim Farriss. "I didn't know he was there until just before we went onstage when I saw a poster," said Singh.
The band impressed the rocker so much that he invited them to record in his recording studio.
That was 18 months ago. The resulting five-track CD, titled What Goes Around, is currently being mastered at the same Sydney studios used by Grinspoon and Kasey Chambers.
The trio hope that it will clinch them a record contract and are currently negotiating with a couple of independent labels.
On Saturday, they come to the Grand Hotel in Wyong, which will be their first gig on the Coast for six months.
"We used to play on the Central Coast alot," said Singh. "After all, that's where we live. But we've been concentrating our efforts on new audiences in Sydney and Newcastle. We're starting to make headway, but intially it was really hard."
If their success in the cities is as big as on the Coast, they are in for an exciting future.
