maps
If you surf the net or search things in BCN you often are often told in which district you have to look for it. Here's a map with the major districts of Barcelona.

The famous "Ramblas" are in the Ciutat Vella district. The University is located at "les corts"  and the central train station is at "Sants".

If you're serching by address, you may do that at
www.bcn.es on the "directoris" page. (this site is availabe in english as well!!).
Of course this metro map is too small to read it.... There are 5 different lines with very good connections. If you arrive to BCN by plane, you can take the train to Barcelona Sants (main station). It depends on which line you're taking, but they all stop at BCN Sants.

If your hotel is located in the city center, you can take the station after BCN Sants which will either be "passeig de gracia" or "plaza catalunya". Both are in the city center.
