WELCOME
==========
Welcome -
Lots of comics news this week, plus more rumors about a
new Movie Script and hints about the upcoming second season of BATMAN BEYOND.
BATMAN AIRWAYS ?
-----------------
This week my father sent me a clipping from
"Airliner World" magazine (July 1999) with a picture of a Caledonian Airways
A320 aircraft whose tail plane had been repainted with a huge representation of
the Animated style BATMAN. According to the text the plane was decorated this
way over the weekend of April 17/18 for a flight between Manchester, England
and Dusseldorf, Germany as the aircraft "had been hired to convey
passengers to a Batman convention in Dusseldorf."
Do any of our European readers know any more about this,
or have any details of a German "Batman Convention" held in April ??
As always, have a great week.

parody "Dark Knight of the Golden Kingdom" (written by Tom Peyer with

by artist Kieron Dwyer) to present an all-new tale of the "Super-Sons of
Batman and Superman," a pair of groovy cats who haven't been seen in
almost twenty years. Plus: Discover the bizarre Birds of Prey newspaper comic

Written by Mark Waid and Devin Grayson; art by Mark
Pajarillo and Walden Wong; cover by Howard Porter and John Dell.
The first of two issues by guest writers Mark Waid and
Devin Grayson and the team of Mark Pajarillo and Walden Wong reveals the role
the JLA has played in "No Man's Land." With Gotham City cut off from
the rest of the nation and crime running rampant on what's left of its streets,
people across the land have wondered what the JLA is going to do about it. That
question is answered as Batman's most powerful allies struggle to protect the
innocent and punish an unexpected group of foes that is trying to use Gotham's
misfortune for its own benefit. ($1.99

PAUL RYAN'S FIRST BATMAN
------------------------
The September releases (see below) of Batman: Legends of
the Dark Knight #123 and Batman: Shadow of the Bat #91 will feature artist Paul
Ryan's first work on the Batman titles. Novelist Steven Barnes has wrote the
two-part No Man's Land story, called "Underground Railroad."
"Unfortunately, for me, Batman has only a brief
appearance in the first issue, doesn't appear at all in the second," Ryan
told The Comic Book Continuum web site. "I do get to play with Robin for a
few pages in the second part, though. Despite the lack of Bat in the tale it is
a very good story. It revolves around Gotham police detective Bock and his
efforts to protect his section of Gotham. It involves the Penguin, the Joker
and a gladitorial fight to the death for Bock in Penguin's arena. The final
chapter has Bock trying to smuggle a group of Gotham children out of No-Man's
Land on an underground railroad while being pursued by a gang of crazed
motorcyclists."
NEW ROBIN ARTIST ?
-----------------
Current penciler of Marvel's Deadpool title, Peter Woods,
recently posted on AOL that he'll "be penciling the smaller half of the
Dynamic Duo beginning with issue #74 in January", an apparent reference to
ROBIN. It probably isn't a coincidence that Matt Idelson, Woods' former
Deadpool editor is the new Editor on Robin.
NO MAN'S LAND - THE MISSING CHAPTER
------------------------------------
If you wondered about the three-month gap eluded to
between the end of "Road To No Man's Land" and the start of the "No Man's Land" story-arcs,
your questions will soon be answered in BATMAN: NO MAN'S LAND #0.
Co-written by Greg Rucka and former editor, and NML story
architect Jordan Gorfinkel, in his first freelance assignment since leaving the
Bat office. The one-shot special focuses on Batman as the Dark Knight suffers a
crisis of confidence following the devastation that changed the face of Gotham.
It will also why The Huntress took up the "mantle of the bat" in
Batman's absence. Art is by the regular Birds Of prey team of Greg Land &
Drew Geraci
MORE PURCELL ART
--------------
Gordon Purcell is following his fill-in on Robin #70 by
drawing Robin #72, which he describes as "a snazzy Killer Croc/No Man's
Land tale." Purcell is also drawing
a Spoiler story for The Batman Chronicles. Both stories are written by Chuck
Dixon.

The Demon Etrigan helps the fallen angel Azmodel (last seen in JLA: Paradise

fronts: Earth, Heaven and Hell itself. (40 pages, $2.95, ships on Sept. 1.)
ANARKY #7
Written by Alan Grant; art and cover by Norm Breyfogle

It's the Day of Judgment for Washington, D.C. War engulfs

uncontrolled violence even as the Haunted Tank rushes onto the scene. (32 pages,

Campanella; cover by Rodolfo Damaggio and Campanella.
Nightwing and Robin guest-star in a one-shot that finds
that the only event that can pull the Dark Knight away from "No Man's
Land" is the Day of Judgment. While Batman's outside Gotham, however, some
very strange things are happening as dead gangsters are rising from their
graves and trying to take back their old territories. It's up to Robin and
Nightwing to hold down the fort and rescue several of Oracle's operatives
who've crossed paths with the gang. The battle lines are drawn between good and
evil in Gotham, with Oracle herself caught in the middle. (48 pages, $3.95,
ships on Sept. 1.)
YOUNG JUSTICE #14

while Red Tornado faces demons of his own. (32 pages, $2.50, ships on Sept. 1.)
DAY OF JUDGMENT #2
Written by Geoff Johns; art and cover by Matt Smith and
Steve Mitchell.
As the battle to save humanity rages on three fronts,
Wonder Woman, Supergirl and the JLA's Zauriel lead their team to Heaven to

its fires. (32 pages, $2.50, ships on Sept. 8.)
AZRAEL: AGENT OF THE BAT #58
Written by Dennis O'Neil; art and cover by Roger Robinson
and James Pascoe.
The Day of Judgment strikes "No Man's Land". As
the demons of hell have been pushed up from below to the surface, Azrael comes
face to face with his most feared demon -- St. Dumas. The founder of the Order
of St. Dumas -- the being most directly responsible for Azrael's strengths and
weaknesses -- tempts the Angel of Vengeance during one of Gotham's darkest
days. (32 pages, $2.25, ships on Sept. 8.)
DAY OF JUDGMENT #3
Written by Geoff Johns; art and cover by Matt Smith and
Steve Mitchell.
Hell is for heroes. Superman, Green Lantern and Zatanna
lead a force of DC heroes into the now-frozen Underworld to re-ignite the dark
realm's fires. Meanwhile, Captain Marvel leads a group of heroes in search of
the one weapon that might stop the Spectre: the Spear of Destiny; and Wonder
Woman's team struggles to leave Limbo with a new heroic host for the Spectre.
(32 pages, $2.50, ships on Sept. 15. )
THE TITANS #9
Written by Devin Grayson; art by Ale Garza and Caleb
Salstrom; cover by Dan Jurgens and Bill Sienkiewicz.

heroes regroup for the final battle with Azmodel for control of the Spectre.
(32 pages, $2.50, ships on Sept. 22.)
DAY OF JUDGMENT #5
Written by Geoff Johns; art and cover by Matt Smith and
Steve Mitchell.
The ultimate battle reaches the ultimate resolution. As
the DCU's heroes face their last stand against the hordes of Hell, the would-be
new host for the Spectre must wrest control away from Azmodel from within the
Spirit of Vengeance himself. Meanwhile, Neron makes his secret gambit and his
fateful plan is revealed. (32 pages, $2.50, ships on Sept. 29.
JLA #35
Written by J.M. Dematteis; art by Mark Pajarillo and
Walden Wong; cover by Howard Porter and John Dell.

deadly foe? No sooner do the earth-shattering events of Day of Judgment subside
than the Justice League finds itself faced with a dilemma of cosmic
proportions. Confronting the evil that exists within all beings -- even the
members of the JLA -- the new Spectre must choose how to fulfill his cosmic
obligations in the fight against evil. But what will he decide? And what role

within the JLA? Or is it somehow too much? It's a question that divides the

BATMAN & SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #5
---------------------------------
"A Woman's Work"
Writer: Karl Kesel, Pencils: Dave Taylor & Tom
Morgan. Inks: Robert Campanella
Colors: Alex Sinclair. Letters: Clem Robins
Editors: Joe Illidge & Darren Vincenzo
Year Five of the Batman / Superman meetings brings two
new characters into the mix, Batgirl and Thorn. This issue revisits the old
World's Finest tradition of pairing of "partner swapping." The result
is an exercise in contrast between the light Batgirl / Superman team and the
dark obsessive Batman/Thorn team. This issue is one of the coolest portrayals
of Batman I've read in a long time. A thread on the Compuserve Comics Forum
discussing this issue was titled "Now THAT'S Batman!" - A sentiment I
agree with completely.
The story itself is full of characterization and
wonderful dialog that hints at secrets hidden (the concluding conversation
between Batman and Superman) and secrets shared (the scene between Superman,
Batgirl and Commissioner Gordon. I would rank this issue as the best of the run
so far.

MOVIE NEWS
**********
BATMAN: THE JOKERS REVENGE
--------------------------
The Comics2Film newsletter and the dark Horizions website
both report that "Fabio2's Batcave website recently published a series of
stories about an alleged new script for the Batman franchise. Fabio2 claims to
have "100% irrefutable proof" that the script exists at Warner Bros.
However, he also cautions that it may well be one of many scripts that the
studio is considering for the next Batman movie.
At any rate, the script is said to be titled Batman: The
Joker's Revenge and is written by a first-time scribe named I. Mansfield. The
script apparently addresses many of the concerns, held by fans and execs, about
the direction of the Caped crusader's movie franchise.
The script is said to be darker and grittier than the
recent sequels. It does feature the actual return of the Joker, not just as a
hallucination. The Joker's death from the first film is said to be recapped.
Later the character is to be resurrected by a newharacter.
What details that have been revealed about the script at
this time are as follows (Thanks to Dark Horizions):
"- The film is set at the end of the millenium
- This is one of the few scripts which does not feature
"The Scarecrow" as a villain
- The Joker is somehow resurrected after the fall from
the Cathedral belltower. How this is possible has not been revealed in detail
yet, though one scene is set in the city morgue a few hours after the Joker's
death plunge.
- There will be three other villains cameoing in the film.
Mr. Zsasz, the serial killer who cuts a mark into his flesh for every victim he
kills, is one. Another villain from a previous film will make a brief
appearance in Arkham Asylum. The third villain plays a vital part in the
'resurrection', one which Bat-fans will know but the general public is unlikely
too.
- No Bruce Wayne love interest, that storyline is being
saved for The Joker who gets his own squeeze.
- Commissioner Gordon will be very different, more of a
down-to-earth personality (sort of like The Animated Series version).
- Two major action sequences will be set in Gotham Square
Park and Gotham's Tropical Casino"
