WELCOME

==========

A SAD LOSS

-----------

This week's GWN is respectfully dedicated to the memory of JOHN BROOME, the great Silver Age writer who passed away this week. For those who wish to know more about John and his work I'd suggest looking up Mark Evanier's column in recent issues of Comic Buyers Guide. (#1326 & 1327). The man could have no better epitaph than those two columns.

Farewell John and thanks for the memories.

BOOK NEWS

-----------

The first batch of signed editions of "The Unauthorized BATMAN Collectors Guide" shipped this week to those GWN readers who pre-ordered a copy. If you haven't yet ordered a copy and would like to, see the note towards the end of this newsletter.

TAYLOR TAKES WORLD'S FINEST BREAK

----------------------------------

Artist Dave Taylor, who I had the pleasure of chatting with at last year's San Diego Comic-Con, has said he is taking time off the Batman & Superman: World's Finest maxi-series. He will pencilling covers only for World's Finest #6-9 and resume interior art with World's Finest #10.

"To cut a very long story short,I have taken time off World's Finest, due to the fact that the deadlines set were stopping the creative team from producing their World's Finest work - notably me," Taylor said. "My page count, per week, went up 50 percent for three months, at the end of which time I was almost at burn out!

"I could see that my work was getting further and further from our intended direction. I made a very difficult decision to stand aside and let someone else take over for a while. Naturally, DC agreed, knowing that we can still keep the book on the existing schedule.

"What this means is #6, 7, 8 and 9 will not be penciled by me, although I am doing all covers. #10 is another 48-page book, and so I am taking all the time I need to do my 'World's Finest' on it! I owe it to The Dark Knight and the big Blue Guy!"

There's no immediate word on who will be drawing the four issues of World's Finest that Taylor isn't drawing.  (Thanks to The Comic Book Continuum for additional information on this story.)

MOENCH RETURNS TO GOTHAM

------------------------

Doug Moench has not been a writer for the "No Man's Land" event in the Batman titles, but will be working with long time collaborator Paul Gulacy on a post-NML project, Outlaws, a Prestige Format story featuring many Gotham City characters.

Moench also has an Elseworlds project, Catwoman: Guardian of Gotham, that he is working on with Jim Balent. In the story Catwoman is the guardian of Gotham City and Batman is a villain more dangerous than the Joker.

NEW BATMAN BEYOND PROMOTIONAL COMIC

-----------------------------------

Following the success of last year's Cartoon Network giveaway comic and TV ad campaign, DC Comics is pleased to announce that it is offering a brand-new promotional giveaway comic, scheduled to arrive in stores on May 12.

The new comic will be a special issue of BATMAN BEYOND, reprinting the two-part origin story that ran in BATMAN BEYOND #1 and #2, re-edited to comfortably fit in one 32-page issue. As DC Executive Vice-President & Publisher Paul Levitz explains,"BATMAN BEYOND is a great comic for bringing in young new readers just getting excited about super-heroes and science fiction -- two classic comic-book themes. Retailers asked us to follow up the Cartoon Network giveaway issue with a more direct bridge to our main comics, and BATMAN BEYOND was a perfect candidate."

In addition to distribution through all participating specialty retailers, starting in May, DC will also be distributing free copies of the BATMAN BEYOND PROMOTIONAL COMIC at three Six Flags theme parks (Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, TX, Six Flags Magic Mountain in Los Angeles, CA, and Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ).

Can the JLAers, now transformed into hairy beasts, overcome their bestial urges and lead their fellow humans in the "gorilla" warfare that's just around the corner? BOOK OF THE WEEK - REVIEW

BATMAN: BEYOND#4

"Magic Is Everywhere"

Writer: Hilary J. Bader. Pencils: Joe Staton. Inks: Terry Beatty. Colors: Lee Loughridge. Letters: Tim Harkins. Editors: Joe Illidge & Darren Vincenzo

The first original Batman Beyond comic story that steps away from the plots and characters defined in the TV episodes to date. The plot, centering around the accidental resurrection of a demon who can only be beaten by calling on The Demon, Etrigan, is an old stand by of DC editorial. It can be found in any number of DC books over the years.

Batman Beyond's strength is it mix of the reassuring familiar ( the iconic Batman figure). The unknown ( the future) and it's innocence (Terry McGinnis's youth and inexperience). It also draws on the other classic fantasy literature tradition of the young knight and his mentor - from Arthur and Merlin through to Luke and Obi-Wan a staple of all great heroic fiction. But this story seems to ignore all this potential.

Don't get me wrong, it's competently written, well drawn in the requisite style - but it just comes across as a filler. Which is a shame as judging from an ad on the back cover that DC and Kraft will use it as a promotional tool in a Jell-O Yogurt offer.
