*************************************************************
HAPPY NEW YEAR
-----------------
Welcome to the first issue of GOTHAM WEEKLY NEWS for
1999. This year is the BATMAN's 60th anniversary year and I'm sure we'll see
lots of new items and activities related to this momentous occasion over the
next twelve months. The year kicks off to a great start with the debut of the
new BATMAN BEYOND TV show.
THANKS
-------
Thanks to everyone who responded to my appeal for
information on the old GOTHAM GAZETTE and BATMANIA fanzines. Several people
have responded with information and offers related to BATMANIA and I'll be
replying to these people individually over the next few days.
ALFRED AWARDS
--------------
Voting in the 1998 ALFRED AWARDS is now complete and I'll
be compiling the results over the next week. Readers of GWN will get the
results before they are posted anywhere else.
GOTHAM GAZETTE ARCHIVES
-----------------------
In response to demand I've started a archive section for
GOTHAM GAZETTE on the web. First up is an area for all the past Fan-Fiction
stories. Including the complete version of Lee Barnett's "La Jolie Laide".
The GG Archive can be found at
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ajporter/batpage.htm
As always have a good week and all the best for a great
1999.

Following the departure of Ty Templeton, Kelly Puckett
and Scott Peterson will be writing upcoming issues of Batman: Gotham
Adventures.
GAIMAN / BISLEY ON A 10 YEAR OLD BATMAN STORY ?
-------------------------------------------------
NEIL GAIMAN recently responded to the a rumor that's been
doing the rounds that a DC editor recently discovered a 10 year old contract
between DC, Gaiman and artist SIMON BISLEY to do a SUPERMAN project, and that
the editor contacted the creators about it and both were interested IF the
publisher met Bisley's current page rate. Turns out the rumor was mostly right,
as Gaiman explained... "No, it's not a Superman project, it's BATMAN: THE
NIGHT CIRCUS ('Batman goes to the circus'). But yes, I was contracted to do it
in about 1989 or 1990, and then Simon signed his exclusive with Tundra and the
project languished and was forgotten, until someone at DC stumbled across the
outline in a drawer somewhere, and realized that contracts had been signed. If
Simon and DC come to an agreement (editor Andy Helfer is currently its
caretaker), then I'll do it. If not I won't, as the project was created for
Simon all those years ago." No word yet if Bisely and DC have come to an
agreement
BATMAN COMICS FOR MARCH
--------------------------
Following are solicitations for the Batman family titles
for March, with information provided by DC Comics:
BATMAN: LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #117
Written by Ian Edginton; art and cover by D'Israeli.
"No Man's Land" continues with part one of the
two-part "Bread and Circuses." Batman takes the battle for Gotham
City to the Penguin's Iceberg Lounge, a refuge for anyone with something to
barter -- even if it's that person's own life. Meanwhile, Gordon and the Blue
Boys suffer casualties in their latest gang turf war, and the new Batgirl makes
a cameo appearance. (32 pages, $1.99, ships on March 3.)
BATMAN: SHADOW OF THE BAT #85
Written by Ian Edginton; art by D'Israeli; cover by Ted
McKeever.
"Bread and Circuses" concludes in an issue
featuring cover art by Ted McKeever (Superman's Metropolis) and including a
cameo by the new Batgirl. Batman battles a succession of particularly nasty
heavies in Penguin's Roman-style arena. The prize: Penguin's supply-line to the
world outside of "No Man's Land." Meanwhile, Gordon, suffering
increasing GCPD losses, reaps dividends from his "deal with the
devil." (32 pages, $1.99, ships on March 10.)
BATMAN #565
Written by Greg Rucka; art by Frank Teran; cover by Teran
and Klaus Janson.
Part one of the two-part "Mosaic," starring the
all-new Batgirl. Black Mask, a major player in Gotham City's underworld, has
gone over the edge and altered his M.O. with the events of "No Man's
Land." Now leading a cult of self-mutilated crazies and trying to take
over the city, Batman and Batgirl -- with a little help from Oracle -- are all
that stand in his way. But Oracle has definite issues with anyone who's going
to put on a costume and call herself Batgirl.
(32 pages, $1.99, ships on March 17.)
DETECTIVE COMICS #732
Written by Greg Rucka; art by Frank Teran; cover by Teran
and Klaus Janson.
Batman, Oracle and the new Batgirl struggle to stop Black
Mask in the conclusion to "Mosaic." How much blood will be spilled
before Batman can take down Black Mask's cult? And perhaps a bigger question
must be answered: Where does Batman deposit the criminals he stops, now that
Gotham City's infrastructure -- including its prisons -- is no more? (32 pages,
$1.99, ships on March 31.)
ANARKY #1
Written by Alan Grant; art and cover by Norm Breyfogle
and Joe Rubinstein.
The JLA guests in the debut issue of this new series,
spun from the pages of Batman. Anarky discovers an extremely powerful threat to
all reality, but when he tries to enlist the JLA's aid, they just try to
capture him for his past crimes. Facing the prospect of battling the most
destructive force in the universe alone, he decides to acquire perhaps the most
powerful weapon in the universe: Green Lantern's power ring. Tying into events
in Green Lantern #112, Anarky gets the ultimate weapon, but will he be willing
to return it when the threat is vanquished? (32 pages, $2.50, ships on March
3.)
BATMAN: ANARKY TP
Written by Alan Grant; art by Norm Breyfogle, Stewart
Johnson, John Paul Leon, Joe Rubinstein, Steve Mitchell, Cam Smith, and
various; cover by Breyfogle.
A trade paperback traces Anarky's development from
fascinating villain to even more fascinating hero. Reprinting Detective Comics
#608-609, The Batman Chronicles #1, Batman: Shadow of the Bat #40-41, and
Anarky #1-4, this collection includes appearances by Batman, Darkseid and the
Demon, and features an introduction by writer Alan Grant and an introduction
and new cover by artist Norm Breyfogle.(208 pages, $12.95, ships on March 3.)
AZRAEL: AGENT OF THE BAT #52
Written by Dennis O'Neil; art and cover by Roger Robinson
and James Pascoe.
Azrael ventures back into the "No Man's Land"
of Gotham City on a mission of mercy, freeing a young girl from the clutches of
the cannibalistic Calibax and returning her to her panic-stricken mother. But
is the girl actually saved?
(32 pages, $2.25, ships on March 10.)
BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES #12
Written by Ty Templeton; art by Rick Burchett and Terry
Beatty; cover by Burchett.
Two-Face has escaped again, but this time he's been
slipped a trick coin that's rigged to come up heads every time. Coupled with
his rather tenuous grip on reality, it results in his becoming a suicidal force
for good in Gotham.(
32 pages, $1.99, ships on March 3.)
BATMAN: JOKER'S APPRENTICE
Written by C.J. Henderson; art and cover by Trevor Von
Eeden and Joe Rubinstein.
The Clown Prince of Crime takes a new inmate under his
wing -- creating a deadly foe for the Dark Knight -- in this extra-size
one-shot written by crime novelist C.J. Henderson. Under the Joker's tutelage,
serial rapist Arthur Rankel escapes from Arkham and embarks on a twisted plan
to trick both the FBI and Batman into believing that a serial killer is heading
for Gotham. But when the ultimate showdown finally takes place, who will have
the last laugh? (64 pages, $3.95, ships on March 3.)
BATMAN: NOSFERATU
Written by Randy and Jean-Marc Lofficier; painted art and
cover by Ted McKeever.
Elseworlds. A return to the world of Superman's
Metropolis introduces a mysterious Bat-Man in this haunting, fully-painted
one-shot. In the "Cabinet of Dr. Arkham", the frightening oracle
known as "The Laughing Man" predicts the future in shows staged for
the amusement of the idle rich. But when he makes shockingly accurate
predictions about his wealthy admirers' deaths, the grotesque seer is the only
one left laughing. The only one who can halt the series of murders is the dark
figure called "the Nosferatu," but he soon runs afoul of another
mysterious figure: the Super-Man. (64 pages, Prestige Format, $5.95.)
BATMAN & SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #2
Written by Karl Kesel; art and cover by Dave Taylor and
Robert Campanella.
The 10-issue maxi-series tracing the partnership of the
Dark Knight and the Man of Steel continues. On the first anniversary of their
failure to save a life during a case, Batman and Superman cross paths at the
victim's grave. The heroes decide to visit each other's cities to see "how
the other half fights crime," giving each a new appreciation of the
other's methods and leading them to reopen the case which continues to haunt
them. (32 pages, $1.99, ships on March 17.)
BATMAN BEYOND #3
Written by Hilary J. Bader; art by Rick Burchett and
Terry Beatty; cover by Bruce Timm and James Tucker.
One of the all-new villains from the Batman Beyond
animated series menaces the Batman of the future. As the radioactive foe known
as Blight tries to procure a substance that will help him render inert all the
sources of power in Gotham City, Batman might have to choose between stopping
the villain and saving a group of homeless kids who get in the way. (32 pages,
$1.99, ships on March 17.)
BIRDS OF PREY #5
Written by Chuck Dixon; art by Greg Land and Drew Geraci;
cover by Land and Brian Stelfreeze.
Part two of a three-part story featuring the Ravens. Can
the Canary avoid being a snack for the horror from the Cretaceous Era living in
the lake at her resort? And, even if she can, how will she defeat the Kobra
agents waiting to kill her and avoid the Ravens, who are on their own mission
nearby? Meanwhile, back in Gotham, Oracle's secret location has been discovered
-- but by whom? (32 pages, $1.99, ships on March 3.)
CATWOMAN #68
Written by Devin Grayson; art by Jim Balent and Marlo
Alquiza; cover by Balent.
Catwoman tries to make friends in a new city -- and a new
costume -- in part three of the six-part "I'll Take Manhattan",
guest-starring the Body Doubles. As Catty tries to get used to the Big Apple,
she discovers that not only does her alias of Selina Kyle have a price on her
head, but the Body Doubles, Gunhawk, and Nightwing nemesis Lady Vic are among
those eager to collect. (32 pages, $1.99, ships on March 31.)
NIGHTWING #31
Written by Chuck Dixon; art and cover by Scott McDaniel
and Karl Story.
The return of Nite-Wing. Tad hunts down those responsible
for his near-death, while Dick Grayson and Clancy -- both on the verge of
making life-altering decisions -- finally enjoy a night on the town. (32 pages,
$1.99, ships on March 10.)
ROBIN #64
Written by Chuck Dixon; art by Staz Johnson and Stan
Woch; cover by David A. Williams and Karl Story.
The Flash guest-stars in the conclusion of a three-part
story. Robin and the Scarlet Speedster reach a climactic showdown with both the
Riddler and Captain Boomerang, but there are even bigger shocks in store for
Tim Drake as Stephanie, the Spoiler, goes into labor. (32 pages, $1.99, ships
on March 31.)

BATGIRL #1
-------------
Alan-- I thought you'd be interested to know that the
January issue of "Femme Fatales" magazine ranked Yvonne Craig as
Batgirl #1 on its list of Sci-Fi's Alltime Fifty Sexiest Figures. Catwomen
Michelle Pfeiffer and Julie Newmar ranked #9 and #11 respectively. Also of
interest to Batman fans on the list was Uma "Poison Ivy" Thurman
(#37). There are articles/interviews with Yvonne Craig and Julie Newmar. The
cover has a great painted portrait (maybe an enhanced photo) of Yvonne Craig's
Batgirl. - Gerry Waggett
([email protected])
AJP: Thanks for the info on the magazine. I saw the
Yvonne Craig cover when I spied a copy in someone else's subscription box at my
local comics shop - but the store didn't have any spare copies. I'm now on the
hunt for a copy to add to my collection.
TOO MUCH VIOLENCE ?
---------------------
Hi, - I hope you don't mind my taking a moment to vent.
Comics cost so
much and these days the bat-books are more violence and blood and gore and too
little story and dialogue! I did not enjoy reading most of the bat-books in
this month's batch. As always, Robin and Gotham Adventures
were good reads, and one regular bat-book was halfway
decent (the one in which Bruce Wayne testifies in Congress - decent even with
art by Jim Aparo). The rest simply disgusted me. Even the Nightwing book,
usually better, overemphasized violence and was just as bad as the others.
I'm seriously
thinking of stopping my subscriptions on some of the batbooks rather than
continue to waste money on such poor quality publications. I've been a comic
book reader for over 30 years, and have seen the batman comics
go through highs and lows in quality. Maybe it is time to
turn my attention and comic dollars to other types of comic books instead and
take a break from the poor quality bat-books.
I long ago
stopped buying the bat-extras (books featuring batman but outside of the regular
batman line). Today I bought the current installment of
Batman-Toyman and immediately regretted it when I saw how
bad it was. Whatever Denny O'Neill has in mind, it had better include an
emphasis on quality writing and characterization over graphic violence for the
sake of attracting loodthirsty readers,
or this longtime reader is going to be lost. - Jamie Berke ([email protected])
