BATMAN #579

Written by Larry Hama; art by Scott McDaniel and Karl Story; cover by McDaniel.

Part 1 of a 2-part story introducing a new villainess: Orca. Like the killer whale that is her namesake, Orca is a deadly denizen of the deep, and she's surfaced in Gotham Harbor to snatch a fabulous diamond known as the Flame of Persia from around the neck of a billionaire heiress. But Orca's motives for the theft are purer than they might seem, and now Batman must face the unpleasant task of thwarting her plans for obtaining the gem in defense of a woman who is little more than a high-society-sanctioned slumlord. (32 pages, $1.99)

BATMAN: DARK VICTORY #8

Written by Jeph Loeb; art and cover by Tim Sale.

A night at the circus introduces the Dark Knight to a new ally as the maxiseries continues. It's the story readers have been waiting for as Bruce Wayne attends a night at the circus and a certain 10-year-old boy enters his life. But, if the Joker blows up Gotham City, will any of it matter? All this and the Hang Man, too. (32 pages, $2.95)

JLA #43

Written by Mark Waid; art and cover by Howard Porter and Drew Geraci.

The beginning a 4-part story that sees the League trim its ranks; rebuild its shattered Watchtower; and face a villain that has managed -- on occasion -- to beat Batman: Ra's al Ghul. What is Ra's' plan? And who's left in the League to face him in the post-Mageddon era? The answers unfold in "Tower of Babel," the storyline that marks the end of Howard Porter's tenure on JLA. (32 pages, $1.99)

NIGHTWING #45

Written by Chuck Dixon; art by Greg Land and José Marzan Jr.; cover by Land and Karl Story.

The four-part "The Hunt for Oracle" crossover with Birds of Prey begins. Blockbuster needs to get to Gorilla City...but he doesn't know where it is. Deciding to "recruit" Oracle to his cause, he sends his brutal operatives after Nightwing to torture her location out of him. (32 pages, $1.99)

ROBIN #78

Written by Chuck Dixon; art and cover by Pete Woods and Jesse Delperdang.

Tim gets a crash course -- emphasis on "crash" -- on the history of Dhabar, his roommate's war-torn homeland -- when the escaped demon Arrakhat comes calling, with Rahfi as his target. Plus, Tim strikes out on an unexpected field of battle and only Alfred can help him; and a surprise guest takes a bow on the last page. (32 pages, $1.99)

SILVER AGE: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #1

Written by Bob Haney; art by Kevin Maguire and Mark Farmer; cover by Jim Aparo and Bill Sienkiewicz.

A wacky tale starring Batman, Green Arrow, Black Canary (all in villainous bodies) and the Metal Men. Doc Magnus and company are chasing after Felix Faust and Catwoman, unaware that they're really attacking Green Arrow and Black Canary. And when Batman (actually the Penguin) orders the Robotic Rescuers to blow the town to smithereens in pursuit of the "villains," Gold, Merc, Lead, Doc, and Tina don't know what to think. (32 pages, $2.50)
