After my short vacation there’s a lot of news to catch up
on.
It’s been a busy two weeks in the world of the Bat, but
perhaps the biggest buzz is the rumor that Frank Miller is to produce a sequel
to his ground breaking “Dark Knight Returns” story.
With more on that, plus other news of Batman on paper,
screen and stage there’s a lot to read in this issue of GWN.
As always, have a great week.

THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS ?
--------------------------------------------------
The big news of the week is the much rumored return of Frank
Miller with a sequel to his 1986 classic “The Dark Knight Returns” mini-series.
Rumors surfaced on Monday that Miller would announce the series while on the
Comic Book Legal Defense Fund raiser cruise being held as part of the Oakland WonderCon.
On Wednesday Miller’s lawyer told the ComicWire
newsletter (http://www.comicbookresources.com
) that “"Frank has ideas for something related to 'Dark Knight,' and it's
in the discussion stage, but there's nothing else more concrete at this point
..Frank has some ideas he'd like to explore on it (Batman) and there's been
some discussions at DC. And he'd like to work for Bob Shreck
again, as well as for DC.”
On Thursday Newsrama (http://anotheruniverse.com/mania
)announced that The Wizard web site (www.wizardworld.com ) had
posted a report indicating Bat editor Bob Schreck had
told attendees of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Benefit Cruise that a
sequel to Dark Knight, entitled Batman:
The Dark Knight Strikes Again is “progressing nicely. We’ve got a lot more
fleshed out now than we did two weeks ago," Schreck
said in the report. "This all stemmed from one scene Frank wanted to do in
Dark Knight but never got in. Now we’ve got some other stuff."
ELLISON ALSO RETURNS
----------------------------------------
(From Newsrama (http://anotheruniverse.com/mania)
According to the new issue of Comics
Buyer’s Guide (#1380, April 28th), Harlan Ellison will write his first
Batman story since 1986’s Detective Comics #567 - a black & white back-up
story for an upcoming issue of Batman: Gotham Knights. “I’m taking Batman back
to what he hasn’t been in years: a detective,” Ellison told CBG’s John Jackson Miller. Gene
(Top Ten) Ha is set to draw Funny Money,
a story that finds the Caped Crusader called in by U.S. Treasury agents to
investigate a counterfeiting operation. According to the article, “Correctly
sensing that punches and batarangs alone aren’t going
to do the job this time, Batman relies on his smarts to bring the matter to a
surprising and clever conclusion.”
Ellison told CBG
he enjoyed returning to work in the Batman universe, noting how closely he
tried to pay attention to some of the milieu’s finer details. “There’s a scene
where Batman meets Commissioner Gordon and some treasury agents, and even
though he calls Gordon by his first name through the whole story, here you must
have Batman say ‘Commissioner’, because Batman isn’t sure Jim Gordon wants the
feds knowing how cozy he is with a vigilante.”
According to a spokesperson for DC, the story is in the
“development” stage and has not yet been placed on their schedule for publication.

BATMAN IN JAPAN
---------------------------
The Comics Continuum (http://comicscontinuum.com/index.htm )reports that Kia Asamiya, the creator of Image Comics' Dark Angel:
Resurrection, is also currently creating a black-and-white Batman manga in Japan.
Fanboy's C.B. Cebulski, who is working with Asamiya
on Dark Angel, said the story, called Child
of Dreams, is running monthly in Magazine Z by Kodansha. The fourth
installment of the story - which is the first original Batman comics series to
be published in Japan -- is out now. "In it, a Japanese news crew travels
to Gotham to report on the mysterious legend of the Batman. And of course they
end up running right into him," Cebulski said.
"So far, in the series, Batman has encountered Two Face, the Penguin, the
Riddler and the Joker, but none are the real deal. There is a new drug
circulating through Gotham that makes average citizen think they are these
villains from Batman's rogues gallery. Bruce Wayne has also taken an interest
in the Japanese female reporter Yuko Yagi."
Cebulski said
there's no word on an English format yet. "But as for its Japanese format,
it will continue running monthly in Magazine Z in Japan for 10 more months, 14
parts in all. It will clock out at around 400 pages total," he said.
"It is scheduled to be collected into two 200-page editions in Japan as
well. It is taking place in Gotham now but his investigation into the drug
takes Batman to Japan halfway through the story in Part 8.
"The first Japanese collected edition, the Gotham
Collection -- might not be the actual title but that is what we are calling it
-- will collect parts 1-7 where Batman iss still in Gotham. It should be
released later this year. The second edition, the Toyko
Collection, will collect the second half of the story, chronicling Batman's
adventures in Tokyo. Due in late 2001 probably.
"There were also two painted Batman posters printed in
Japan, both folded and bound into earlier issues of Magazine Z last year. They
were titled First Crime and Batman and the Batmobile.
As far as we know, there are no plans to release them again in Japan or here,
although Asamiya-sensei would love to see them as a
general release."
MILLENIUM WINNER – BATGIRL
-----------------------------
DC has announced the latest results DC Millennium Edition
Voting online fan-voting program. Last month’s winner was 1966’s Detective Comics #359, which features
the first appearance of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl. The Millennium Edition
reprint will be available with books shipping in August.
NEAL ADAMS CALLS OFF HUNT
----------------------------------------------
GWN recently reported that legendary Batman artist Neal
Adams was aggressively tracking down what he believed to be “stolen” pages of
his original artwork. In a statement posted on his own website ( www.NealAdams.com) on April 12th
he called off his search.
In the statement Adams said “It has become apparent to me
after a reasonable but incomplete investigation, that my artwork has passed
through enough hands that the guilty are now so far from my originals and the
innocent have now acquired them honestly. To go through this process any
further would be bad for everyone, so I hearby call
off my attempts to retrieve my once stolen artwork. If you have any, as far as
I am concerned, you may keep it."
BATMAN / WONDER WOMAN
-----------------------------------------------
Last month DC announced that Phil Jimenez would be taking
over as writer and penciler of the monthly Wonder
Woman for a year-long stint beginning with November’s issue #164. Jimenez has now released details of his first
story arc. “For the first Wonder Woman story arc, we're planning a Batman
family/Wonder Woman family crossover dealing with an alliance between the
Children of Ares and some classic Batman villains who plan to take over Gotham
in the name of Ares. “
DIXON ON NIGHTWING
----------------------------------
Writer Chuck Dixon recently provided the Comics Continuum
website ( http://www.comicscontinuum.com)
with an update on his Nightwing projects, which will include an anniversary
issue and an 80-Page Giant. "I'm currently writing Nightwing #50 which will be double-sized," Dixon said.
"It's a big story with Dick Grayson in action both as a cop and as
Nightwing. Several big subplots reach their conclusions in this story and a few
more begin. Greg (Land) is doing the entire 38 pages so this one's a keeper.
"The following issue is a special one-shot story drawn
by Kieron Dwyer. It answers most of your questions
about the enigmatic and annoying Tad Ryerstad, the
Man Who Would Be Nite-Wing. In light of the events
coming up in 'Hunt For Oracle' it's an important story for the series. I wrote
the story with Kieron in mind and it's a killer.
"I'm also in the middle of scripting Nightwing 80-Page Giant #1 which will
be out in October. It introduces a new villainess named Hella
and, as always, the story is tied into Nightwing continuity. It's a standalone
story and can be enjoyed on its own merits but there's some heavy revelations
to found about Bludhaven's past. We see how the
powers that rule the 'haven now came into power. The art is split between
Manuel Gutierrez and Mike Collins. These guys are close to one another
stylistically and I'm splitting their chapters according to their strengths."
ROBIN NEWS
-------------------
DC Comics editor Matt Idelson also
talked to the Comics Continuum website (http://www.comicscontinuum.com )
recently and revealed plans for Robin -
both in the currently monthly and in an upcoming mini-series featuring the
first version of the character.
"Robin is going to get a new roommate," Idelson said about the monthly title. "He's going to
find more students at his school who aren't really what they appear to be, and
he's going to find that Brentwood isn't really such a nice private school. He's
got a history unlike any of the other boys at the school and it all ties in
with events from the beginning of Tim's career as Robin," added writer
Chuck Dixon of the new roommate. "This story will carry us from the end of
this year into 2001."
In the more immediate future, Green Arrow guest-stars in Robin #79.
Idelson also
commented about the upcoming, four-issue Robin:
Year One mini-series by Dixon and Javier Pulido which
features the early days of Dick Grayson as Robin. "It features a lot of
his first battles with a lot of villains, and you'll understand is relationship
with Batman a little bit better," Idelson said.
"It actually sets up a villain who will be showing up in Nightwing after
the series is over."
BATMAN: EGO
-------------
Look out for Batman:
Ego a one-shot shipping in August from DC Comics. The book is by Darwyn Cooke. "This was really an unusual
situation," said Mike Carlin, DC Comics executive editor. "The guy
who is doing this is an accomplished artist. He's been working on the animation
side of Batman and Superman for a while. This was a submission that he just
worked on by his lonesome and sent in pretty much done. That never happens
anymore. We like to be on the start of things.
"There was not a lot we could do with this. This was
totally on the right track. It wasn't finished. Mark Chiarello,
who is our cover editor and art director, is working to finish this project up.
"It is going to an amazing looking book and it's a
really fun, psychological study of what makes Batman tick."
Carlin said the project is unusual because DC doesn't want
creators sending in completed projects. "This guy is remarkable,"
Carlin said.

reports that The third commercial in the Batman/OnStar
series premiered on the evening of Monday April 3rd shortly after 10 o'clock
during CBS' telecast of the NCAA Championship game, won by Michigan State over
Florida. The commercial, called "Joker Face," has Batman in the Batmobile chasing Joker's car through the streets of Gotham
City. Joker puts a roadblock, which the Batmobile
hits, activating the airbags. An OnStar
representative comes on over the computer network, notifying him that a signal
that his airbag had been deployed and if he need assistance.
Batman said no, but used the connection to help trap the
Joker's car. Having captured The Joker, Batman said, "He'll never
learn." The Joker was played by a Curtis Armstrong (Booger on Revenge of
the Neards) recognizable only by his voice. His makeup
featured an exaggerated, prosthetic chin.
The Continuum has learned that there might be yet another

MORE WRITERS APPROACHED

Legendary screenwriter William Goldman is been hinted at as
a potentail scripter of BATMAN5. Fabio2's Batcave

CLOONEY STILL BALMES HIMSELF (PARTLY)
---------------------------------------
From The Batman: Animated Newsletter comes a report that Cinescape's Cindy Pearlman recently shared the inside scoop on George
Clooney and his feelings about Batman and Robin for the May/June issue of the
magazine
While continuing a prior theme of crediting
himself with "possibly sinking the entire Batman franchise", Clooney
commented that the death of the Dark Knight may have bolstered his own career.
"I think Batman & Robin not doing so well was a real awakening for me.
That was the turning point where I said 'O.K., I'm just going to do projects
and scripts that I like,'" Clooney explains. "I sat down with my
business manager and he said, 'You can [afford] to do that.'"
Clooney, however, insists that his lack of
box-office success is somewhat exaggerated. "Only one movie was designated
to make a ton of money and that was Batman & Robin," he says. "It
didn't make that ton because it wasn't a very good movie. Period. I take some
responsibility. I basically buried a franchise. I'll take the heat, but not all
the heat. They should have stayed with a Dark Knight story, but they didn't.
