BYE-BYE BEYOND HELLO BAT COMMERCIALS
--------------------------------------
The most baffling news of the week is the apparent decision
by Warner Bros. to suspend production on Batman Beyond after 52 episodes. And
in the same week Batman and the Batmobile become the
tars of a new promotional campaign from General Motors. See “TV News” below for
more on these.
OH WHERE DID THOSE FAN-FICS GO ?
------------------------------
Since the GOTHAM GAZETTE web-site went into hiatus I’ve had
several e-mails from GWN readers asking where they can find the excellent fanfic stories we used to run. Well writer Lee Barnett now
has them posted on his own website at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/budgie
so click on by and check them out.
I WAS ONLY JOKING ?
--------------------
Remember my rant a few weeks ago about why the WB stores
didn’t stock DC comics but stocked competitors titles? I jokingly suggested
that if the rumored new X-Men animated series did show on the KidsWB that they may end up selling Marvel stuff
Guess what – they are. OK not comics but Warner Bros stores
have announced that they will soon be selling Marvel related lithographs in the
gallery stores !
And on that strange note, have a good week.

NO MORE BATMAN BEYOND !!?
-----------------------
Storyboard and comics artist Keith Giffen
reports on his website (http://members.xoom.com/giffrespage/news.html)
that “Warner has pulled the plug on the very
popular Batman Beyond show with the
52nd episode. For anyone who watches the show it would be difficult to see any
advantage or logic behind WB's decision. "There is no logic in the
animation industry. I don't understand it either because Batman Beyond stuff is taking off. The toys are starting to sell,
and Burger King is starting to do the toys and they close production." 52
episodes makes a full years worth of BB, and I guess the suits at the WB
figure that should hold the franchise for the foreseeable future. “
This was confirmed by Shane Glines,
a character designer at Warner Bros. who told the Comics Continuum website that
"Batman Beyond is indeed ending, a decision which has most of the crew
baffled.”
However Paul Dini pointed out in a
WizardWorld interview that Batman Beyond was initially set for a specific, three-season run.
"We were only going to go to 52 episodes to start with. We're taking a
wait-and-see attitude right now."
Batmobile Gets OnStar System
-------------------------------------------------
(From Mainia’s “The Daily Buzz”)
General Motors announced this week that a line of new commericals for its OnStar
onboard navigation system will feature the Batman and the Batmobile
beginning February 17th during ER on
NBC.
According to the press relase:
"Batman trusts OnStar to help
him overcome the extraordinary obstacles he faces on the road. We believe
consumers will feel similarly empowered with the confidence and security of
knowing OnStar is there to lend them a hand,"
said Jeff Cohen, executive director for Sales and Services Marketing for OnStar. "Batman and the Batmobile
are powerful metaphors for illustrating how OnStar's
advanced technology can solve everyday problems on the road in a personal and
easily accessible way."
The first of three TV spots created by OnStar's
advertising agency, Campbell-Ewald, is titled
"Batcave" and introduces the Batmobile's
newest feature -- OnStar.
The spot begins as Batman lands in the Batcave and his
longtime personal assistant, Alfred, announces that he has stepped up safety in
the Batmobile: "Should a villain steal it,
someone will track it. If your air bag goes off, an advisor will assist you. If
you're stranded, satellites will help locate you." Batman, pleased with
this enhancement, zooms out of the Batcave and tests his latest technological
marvel. As he pushes the OnStar button we hear the OnStar Advisor ask, "OnStar.
How may I help you, Batman?"
In more than 60 years of existence, Batman has rarely made a
live-action appearance for a product.
"The Batmobile has been the
most powerful and technologically advanced vehicle on the road for more than
six decades," said Joel Ehrlich, senior vice president, DC Comics
Promotions and Advertising & Warner Bros. Consumer Products Promotions.
"And now OnStar's impressive service and
technology will insure that Batman maintains his edge in his own singular
way." Two future TV spots --
"Joker Face" and "Minor Setbacks" -- will follow
"Batcave" and feature the OnStar-enhanced Batmobile and the superior safety, security and
communication services now available to Batman. National print ads and Internet
advertising will also soon be unveiled in support of the campaign.
There's nor word on who the actor under the cowl will be.
