WELCOME
==========
GOODBYE TO THE 20th CENTURY
----------------------------
Welcome to the last issue of GOTHAM WEEKLY NEWS for the
20th century. Boy that still seems unreal, even though, as I write it, there
are less than 10 hours to go. The 21st Century always seemed so far in my
future, and now it's here. Anyway all the best to all GWN
readers around the world. Have a great New Year and we'll see you all on
the other side of "The Millennium."
NML - YOUR THOUGHTS
------------------
New Years' Eve sees the official end of Gotham City's No
Man's Land. The year long experiment is over. Write and let me know what you
thought about it and I'll make sure to pass on your comments to the
"architects" of NML.
1999 ALFRED AWARDS - LAST WEEK TO VOTE
-----------------------------------------
As a few people have only just received their voting
forms I've decided to extended the voting for another week. So if you haven't
already voted, this upcoming week is the last chance. Any votes received after
Friday 7th January will not be counted.
One title and character is still well ahead in the
voting, and it isn't who you'd think. So if you want to see your favorites win
- don't forget to vote, vote, vote !
DEDICATION
------------
This issue of GWN is respectfully dedicated to the memory
of the man who bought the archetypal "masked man" to life and
inspired a love of heroes in me and countless others.
For Clayton Moore (1914-1999) - So long Kemosabe.

-----------------------------
Chuck Dixon recently provided The Comics Continuum
web-site with first details about "Siege," a four-issue crossover
between Nightwing and Birds of Prey that starts in May from DC Comics.
"'Siege' runs from Nightwing #45 to Birds of Prey
#20 to Nightwing #46 to Birds of Prey #21, where it concludes," Dixon told
The Continuum. "But there are continuing repercussions for both books.
Oracle realizes that she is being hunted by professionals as adept at
cyber-security as she is and leaves her newly rebuilt lair to lead them away.
But despite all of her expertise, these bad guys stay one step behind her.
Black Canary is on the other side of the world and Nightwing is on the other
side of town when this is happening and both race to be by her side in her
greatest moment of need. The four issues are unusual in that they take place in
a very condensed space of time. We follow our characters over a 12-hour span
catching up with them almost moment by moment.
"And no bull, the events in this crossover will
affect both books forever. I've been waiting three years to write this story
and I've put everything into it. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll wet your
pants. Longtime readers of either of these books can't miss these issues."

AFFLECK SIGNS ON FOR THE CAPE & COWL
?
------------------------------------
The New York Post reported this week that Ben Affleck has
signed-on as the next Batman. The only catch is that the Dogma star is said to
want girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow to appear as Catwoman. Last week, Post
columnist Liz Smith reported that Affleck had signed a $15 million deal with
Warner Bros. to portray the Caped Crusader in the next Batman feature.
The story was picked up by the UK's Sunday Mirror who
reported that "Ben has told studio executive he'd love to be the fourth
Batman, but he really wants Gwyneth to play Catwoman alongside him," the
paper then quoted "a source" at Warner Bros. "She was very
excited about the role, but is so popular in Hollywood right now that she has
her pick of any role. She can't decide if the part will be good for her
career."
BUT THE MAN HIMSELF DENIES IT
-------------------------------
The Dark Horizons website then reported that Ben Affleck
himself in a post on his affleck.com messageboard, slammed shut the door on the
gossip saying "As I'm sure most of you might infer, this story is absurd.
There is no Batman script, no movie being planned, they have not called me or
my agent and Gwyneth is much more the "Electra" (daredevil reference)
type...I really have no idea where they get this stuff. It is as if someone
sits in a room and quite literally invents it".
