"NO MAN'S LAND" - FIRST STORY ARC

------------------------------------------------------------

The first story arc of the year long event "No Man's Land" kicks off in the Batman comics shipping in January 1999 with a tale called "No Law and a New Order" wriiten by

Bob Gale with art by  Alex Maleev and Wayne Faucher.

It kicks off with a special NON MAN'S LAND issue available as either a "Collector's Edition" with a painted lenticular cover by Alex Ross, or a stanadrd

"Newsstand" edition. The story starts three months since Gotham was declared unsalvageable, and the Dark Knight is nowhere to be found. With Gotham carved up into

sectors by warring villains, Oracle provides running commentary on a city well on the way from bad to worse. But a Batman-like figure  has been spotted around the city;

is this the return of Gotham's defender, or is someone else wearing the mantle of the Bat?  It's been rumored for month's that NML will feature the return of a BATGIRL

character to the Batman family, this could be the first appearence..

The story continues in SHADOW OF THE BAT #83 which features a cameo by this "mysterious" new character. As the city falls deeper into despair without the

Dark Knight and the law is determined by which "sector" of Gotham one is in, James Gordon leads what remains of the GCPD in a new plan to take the city back, sector

by sector.

The Dark Knight returns to Gotham in BATMAN #563, Where has Batman been all these months? And what action will he take as the GCPD battles city gangs

in a desperate battle to take back the sector containing both police headquarters and Oracle's home?

in part three of "No Law and a New Order."

"No Law and a New Order" concludes in DETECTIVE #730 as Batman battles Scarface for control of his sector, the Dark Knight quickly learns that he must

adapt to a new way of thinking if he wants to hold onto any of the territory he reclaims. Meanwhile, infighting amongst the GCPD causes problems for Commissioner

Gordon.

OTHER NML NEWS

---------------------------------

 - NML will include a special one-part story guest-starring Superman (written by Kelley Puckett, art by Jon Bogdanove and Eduardo Barreto) that addresses a source of

controversy amongst readers since the plans for NML were revealed - why the rest of the DCU super-hero community has not been in Gotham since the earthquake?

 -  Robin leaves Gotham for Keystone City, home of the Flash in ROBIN #62, and Nightwing has to deal with an influx of Gotham's displaced criminal element in

February's NIGHTWING #30.

MOVIE RUMORS

********************

ANOTHER NAIL IN THE COFFIN OF THE BATMAN FRANCHISE ?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comis2Film reports that an apparent  insider at Warner Bros. claims that WB executives were hoping the new movie Soldier would boost star Kurt Russell's popularity to

the point where he could add renewed interest to the failing Batman franchise.  Apparently the word-of-mouth on Soldier has been poor.  The source claims another factor

is WB's track record with recent big budget / high profile bombs such as "Batman & Robin" and "The Avengers".   WB are apparently now looking towards the

reborn Superman movie to relaunch that  franchise and replace Batman.

"...WB is dropping Batman. They're not gonna stop with the animated show, but as for feature films, unless Tim Burton brings himself in here asking for number

5, it's not gonna happen."

The source  also shed some light on George Clooney's part in the Batman5 rumor mill. Apparently the actor received a script (for Batman 5) around the same

time he announced he was leaving ER. Allegedly, Clooney hated the script and began the process of trying to get out of his two-picture contract.

LETTERS TO GWN

BTAS ON DVD ?

-------------------------

HI there - Some people have been asking if there's any chance of Batman and Superman animation being released on the DVD format. I asked Boyd Kirkland,

Producer/Writer/Director of Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero, and he told me that WB Home Video has no plans to release any such animation on DVD. In fact, he said

that WB only pressed 1500 copies of the Sub-Zero laserdisc! Mr. Kirkland suggested that a letter-writing campaign from enough fans may persuade WB to change their

minds. This is the address he gave me:

Tom Lezinski

Warner Home Video

3903 W. Olive Ave.

Burbank, CA 91522

Over The Edge and Speed Demons. My e-mail address is [email protected].

Thanks.

AJP: Don't forget that unless you have a dual standard VCR ( which are available in Europe, but not the USA) then any tapes will have to be in UK-PAL format not the US
