This is a subect we have tried avoiding for weeks.  But, if we want to keep this site up, we have to address this.  Many fans like to think that the Backstreet Boys are invincible, indestructable and all around perfect.  They're not.  We know that now....we ALL know that.  I think as a humor site, we'd like to think that there are only good times,  but the good times always come with bad.  So, here's our best effort at addressing this subject. (We know that it's not written perfectly and it may be kind of jumpy, but that's just how Katie thinks sometimes.)
True courage is something that is rarely found in a person.  Courage does not mean being fearless.  It means facing your fears and doing something you are afraid to do in order to better yourself or your surroundings.  Courage is truly hard to come by these days when it's easier to run from your obsticles rather than face them head on.  Courage is telling the entire world on national television that you have a problem.  Courage is what each Backstreet Boy possesses, especially AJ.
Imagine being on top of the world, with everything you have ever dreamed of at your fingertips.  You have talent, fame, money, youth, good looks, and millions of fans....but you're just not happy.  True, you may have everything you thought you ever wanted, but would you really be satisfied with that?  If you think you would be, you're lying to yourself.  It's the little things in life that make it all worth it, and if you don't have those little things, what kind of life are you living?  For me, hugs from my grandmother and late night phone conversations with Abbie about anything and everything have kept me going.  I have friends and family that I love and trust more than anything.  The little things about my life are what make it special and worth living every day.  What if there were no little things, though?  There is no way I could be happy.
AJ has all those things people say they wish for.  You may think he's lucky....he IS.  But what good is fame, talent, money, and beauty without happiness to enjoy it?  The fact of the matter is that AJ is just not happy anymore.  Deciding to get help is the only thing AJ could have done to help himself and the people around him.  The first step really IS admitting you have a problem.  But, it's nowhere near over for him.
AJ has a real battle ahead of him. Thirty days may be all he has to go through in rehab, but the healing will last a lifetime.  Despite what many people think, depression is a REAL disease!  It is not something you can just wake up one morning and be over.  It's not a common cold.  It is an uphill battle all the way.  Believe me, I've seen depression and what it can do to a person.  I've
felt what it does to the people around it.  It's an ugly monster that is not easy to slay.
Depression and alcoholism are both very serious diseases and a terrible thing to have to live through.  AJ has responsibly dealt with the fact that he has a problem. He is taking action to fix it. This takes so much courage and faith. AJ may have a problem, but at least he steps up as a responsible and mature adult and gets the help he needs to get better.
In short, the respect and love we have always had for AJ and the Boys at least triples after this.  While most pop acts out there have only good looks and mediocre talent to build from, the Backstreet Boys have real raw talent and an incredible standard of ethics and morals.
For all the skeptics that say that Backstreet is over:  as long as there are fans, Backstreet will live.
And as for the parents that say the Backstreet Boys are poor role modles for their young, impressionable children: We pity you.  What kind of things do you teach your children?  It's wrong to drink, but it's worse to talk about it?  The way we see it, the Backstreet Boys are some of the best role modles a child could have.  They may have problems...but who on earth doesn't?  THEY ARE HUMAN!  They are in the spotlight and while most people in their position would have hidden this real problem from their fans and the world, the Boys have decided to be honest and come clean about this.  How could honesty be a poor role model?
Therefore,  in the end, all we really have to say is: We love you, Backstreet Boys and...
We're with you, AJ
We're with you, AJ.
